"I'm not listening to you."

"Tell us what we need to know," Nicky said. "I guarantee that you're going to wish you were dead before it's all over if you don't."

"I'm not going to talk to you," Katz said, "because I don't know shit about any of these women!”

"You do," Nicky said. "You matched with Meghan. You met her. But when you saw each other in real life, you didn't look like your photos, did you? And you're much older than you claim to be online."

Katz was sweating now, brown eyes flicking between Ken and Nicky. "That's not true."

"You're not getting out of this one," Nicky said. "We know everything we need to know about you, Mr. Katz. And I will tell you this: we know for a fact that you were going to kill Meghan Salinger, like you killed all these other women. Where's Meghan, Jordan?"

"I don't know what you're talking about!"

Nicky stopped herself from pushing on. Of course, turning on the aggression and acting like she already knew he was guilty was a tactic that worked in some cases, but not others. Here, she was desperate, and that was coming through in her work.

But there were also a couple things that didn't add up. For one, if he had Meghan, and abducted his new victim earlier today, why was he at a black-tie event?

Meghan went missing months ago, so confirming his alibi for then would be hard. But they could still figure out where he was earlier today.

"Where were you earlier, Jordan?" Nicky asked.

"I was working an open house," he said.

"And did anyone come by?"

"Well, no, but--"

"No one came by?" Nicky asked. "Can anyone confirm if you were actually there?"

Jordan's face turned red. He looked away. "It wasn't exactly a hot property. No one showed up. But I promise you, I was there all day. Maybe someone did see me, I don't know."

"That's not good enough, Jordan," Ken said. "Maybe no one can tell us where you were because you were abducting your next victim."

"What? No. I mean, of course. I wouldn't do that."

"And why was that?" Nicky asked. "Because you can't get the women you'd already abducted out of your system? And it occurred to you that you could target someone new?"

"That's not true!"

"You're a killer," Ken said. "You've done this before. And you're going to kill Meghan Salinger. I have no doubt."

"No one's going to believe that."

"They will, Jordan," Ken said.

"This is all crazy talk," Jordan said. "When I get out of here, I'm gonna sue you two so hard. You really messed with the wrong guy.”

A knock at the door cut the interrogation short. Nicky looked over her shoulder to see Sheriff Corbin, looking grim. "You two. We need to talk. Now."

Nicky shot Jordan a look before she and Ken met with the sheriff in the hall. The sheriff eyed them up. If the FBI wasn't all over this, Nicky was sure he wouldn't be so keen on relaying information, but he was being cooperative enough now.

"We just got word that Katz's properties have been searched extensively," Corbin said. "There's no sign of either of the missing women."

Nicky’s stomach dropped. That didn’t sound good. "They've been checking everywhere?" Nicky asked.

"Yeah. My team, plus some of yours from the FBI, have got a whole team searching for Meghan Salinger and the other girl. They've got a dog unit and everything. I know Katz personally--his uncle Frank Katz is a good man. But let's put that aside for a second, because as you both know, this is out my hands now that you feds are involved."

Nicky could tell this was the biggest ego blow of Corbin's career, but she couldn't care less about that.
