Her friend grabs her by the wrist and takes off running with her toward the estate. Sadie looks over her shoulder and under the moonlight I catch her shooting me a wink and then she sticks out her tongue at me. What a brat.

Wishing I had time to let my erection die down so I can step out of this car without looking like I have the flexibility of a hundred-year-old retired NFL veteran, I remind myself that the most important thing is staying close to her.

I check my concealed carry underneath my shirt and the other under the leg of my pants. Locked and loaded and ready to make sure no one puts their hands on my woman. No one who wants to make her theirs at least.

Moving toward the house I get a few funny looks, but I don’t care. Most of these little shits are already drunk, unable to form coherent sentences.

My eyes scan the house as I look over the perimeter, accessing all the entry and exit points. It’s an instinct that’s engrained in me, and not one I’m going to give up now that I’m in the civilian world. Not at all. If anything it becomes more important because I’m dealing with untrained people. Young boys who aren’t predictable, except in one area.

Their desire for cheap, easy sex.

No. Fucking. Way.

Not on my watch and I know Sadie doesn’t want that either, despite trying to play this little game with me tonight.

She wants to play? Well, it’s time to show her that it takes two to tango.

“So,” Ally begins, “tell me about Soren.”

She hands me a red plastic cup, which I just stare down into, the smell of beer repulsive.

“What do you already know? What do you want to know?” I answer guardedly. I don’t really want to provide her with any information, not to mention Soren is mine, not anyone else’s.

“Have you two. You know?” She makes a circle with her thumb and index finger on one hand and pokes the index finger of her other hand through it and back a few times. “Done the horizontal mambo?”

Horizontal mambo? What kind of sophomoric guy lingo is this?

“I’d rather not talk about my private life,” I say, bringing the cup to my lips to take a sip out of nervousness, trying to diffuse the situation.

“Come onnnnn. What’s a little gossip between friends?” she asks, tapping her cup to mine. “Cheers.”

I take another sip and she downs her beer, making me look like the lightweight that I am. I’m a fish out of water here, my plan completely backfiring. I realize I shouldn’t have made my decision simply to make Soren jealous. I should have come because I wanted to, not for ulterior motives.

But that’s water under the bridge now, despite the fact I’d rather be at home.

“I have to use the bathroom. Be right back,” Ally says, taking off down the hallway of the house, leaving me alone…but not for long.

“What’s cookin’, good lookin’?” a wobbling guy asks. “Don’t tell me you’re here alone?” He tips his head back and lets out a big burp. Oh my, he really knows how to impress a woman.

“She’s not alone. She’s got us,” a separate voice from behind says, grabbing me by the arms.

“Ever had a threesome?” the guy in front of me asks.

“Because if not, today’s your lucky day?” the one behind me says.

They’re shirtless and they’re not small at all. They’re well over six feet and in great shape, probably some of the football players Ally mentioned would be hosting this party.

Without warning the guy behind me scoops me up off the ground, my drink falling from my hand as he holds me above his head.

“Put her down. Now. Before I put you six feet under.” The voice is deep, dark.

“Who the fuck let grandpa in?” the guy holding me says.

“He’s Paul Blart mall cop. Security. Look how he’s dressed.”
