She smirks. “Because you just confirmed it.” She clears her throat before admitting. “And I may have done a bit of hacking.”
“You can hack?” Ashlyn screeches. “Since when? Why haven’t you offered your services to us before?”
Lilac’s nose wrinkles. “Because I wouldn’t do well in prison. You wouldn’t either.”
“Ha! I’ve never had a problem in jail before.”
“What? When were you in jail?” Juniper asks Ashlyn.
Ashlyn’s eyes widen. “Oops!”
Aspen claps her hands. “Let’s return to the matter at hand. Besides, you can’t possibly be surprised Ashlyn has been in jail before. You spent a night in jail with her, remember?”
“I want to know more about Ashlyn’s criminal past,” I insist.
Aspen wags a finger at me. “Liar. You’re avoiding the subject. You don’t want us to discuss how you’re afraid to give Cole a chance.”
“He’s the father of your child. You can’t ignore him forever,” Lilac points out.
My hand automatically moves to my stomach. “Thanks for the reminder.”
“Why didn’t you tell us you were pregnant?” Juniper’s voice is filled with hurt. I close my eyes and let my head fall back against the cushions.
“I was trying to ignore the situation,” I admit.
Lilac coughs. “You can’t ignore it for much longer. You’re nearly mid-pregnancy. If you want to give the baby up for adoption, you need to—”
Ashlyn gasps. “Give the baby up for adoption? What?”
“She said she isn’t sure what she wants to do,” Juniper explains before I have a chance to respond.
“I’ll take her.” My eyes fly open to find Ashlyn staring at me. “Rowan and I will raise her until you’re ready to handle being a mom.”
“Did I enter an alternate universe? How is it possible my little sister is more responsible than me?”
“I think you mean parallel universe.”
“I’m begging you,” I plead. “Someone stop Lilac before she explains what a parallel universe is.”
“Your aversion to science is going to catch up to you someday. I hope your child is a scientific wunderkind.”
“I haven’t even had the child yet and my sisters are arguing about who will raise her and whether she’ll love science,” I mutter to myself. “And you wonder why I didn’t tell any of you about my pregnancy.”
Aspen laughs. “You didn’t tell us because you’re terrified to have a relationship with your baby daddy.”
Damn. Having a sister who knows your every secret and fear sucks sometimes.
“Cole isn’t here to stay. He’s not from here.”
“And you’re hiding behind where he lives in order to avoid having a relationship with the man. Try again.” Aspen should have gone into psychotherapy instead of owning a bookstore.
“Cole being the father of my child doesn’t mean I want to be in a relationship with him.”
“Ha!” Aspen barks. “You don’t have sex with men you don’t like. You like him, but you’re scared.”
I throw my pillow at her. “Stop saying I’m scared.”
“If the shoe fits,” she sings.
