Chapter 28

Go the distance – carry through with an endeavor no matter how much the idea makes you want to smash your head against the wall again and again

Rowan

“What are you doing here?” Ellery hisses when I enter The Inn on Main.

“I’m here to get my ex-wife to leave.”

“About damn time. She’s in her room plotting world domination.”

I snort. “She’s too lazy to dominate the world.”

“Thank the heavens. No disrespect to you, but she’s mean - rattlesnake biting you because it feels like it - mean.”

“I am aware,” I mutter before raising my voice to ask, “What room number?”

“Are you sure you want to go up there? I can ring her room and have her come down here.”

“There isn’t a chance in hell she’ll have a conversation with me in public.”

She considers me for a moment before giving in. “She’s in room seven on the second floor.”

I rush up the stairs. Not only do I not want anyone seeing me here before I can explain my visit to Ash, but I don’t want to be here. I reach the room and knock on Sandra’s door while calling out her name. “Sandra. We need to talk.”

“Just a minute,” she sings.

Judging by the excitement in her voice, she thinks she’s won. She’s probably in there now changing into ‘something more comfortable’. Save me.

“I’m coming in.”

I open the door and sure enough, she’s digging through one of her multitude of suitcases. She spins around when she realizes I’m already in the room.

“Rowan,” she simpers before sauntering toward me.

I hold up my hands. “Have a seat, Sandra. We need to talk.”

“But there are much better things we can be doing.” Her gaze flicks to the bed.

Is she delusional? Does she actually think I’m going to jump into bed with her after she left me while I was still in the hospital recovering from a career-ending knee surgery?

“You need to leave Winter Falls.”

She sticks out her bottom lip in a pout. “Why? Are you moving?”

Is she deliberately being obtuse? “No, I’m staying and you’re leaving.”

“Long distance relationships don’t work.”

“True story,” I hear Ellery whisper from the hallway where I know she’s listening. I left the door open for her on purpose. I don’t want Ash thinking I’m in here having sex with my ex.

“We are not having a long distance relationship. We’re not having any relationship. It’s what happens when two people divorce. Unless they have children.” My heart squeezes at the word children.

She huffs. “You and your quest to have children. It’s tiresome. I’m glad I lied to you about you being sterile, so you would stop pushing me to have children.”

I must have heard her wrong. She didn’t just tell me she lied about me being sterile. No, not even Sandra is that cruel.

“What did you say?”
