Dove

Istartleawakeat the sound of the door opening above, and I shuffle farther under the bed, hitting my back against the grimy wall.

Someone has arrived, and I bet they’re going to kill me just as I feared.

I cover my mouth to muffle my breathing, tears slipping down my cheeks as the alpha slowly stalks toward the bed. My heart pounds as I don’t take my eyes off his thick leather boots, and I hate them. I truly do. They’re the evilest alphas I have ever met.

Why did they bring me back to their home just to kill me?

It’s not fair. But such is life.

My nose catches the smell of cooked steak, and my stupid stomach betrays me. It groans in protest, and I double over, biting my lower lip.

This must be a mistake. They haven’t really brought me food, right? It makes no sense. Why would they bring me food if they plan to kill me?

These alphas are so confusing.

“Get up.”

My heart stops. I would know that cold, hollow voice anywhere.

It’s Sebastian.

I don’t move. I remain curled under the bed, hoping he will just leave the steak and go. Are they fattening me up for something? For what, exactly?

Crap. Are they cannibals? They’re cannibals, aren’t they?

I thought they looked insane.

I squeak and the alpha growls. “I said, get up!”

It’s a command, an alpha’s command, and I have no choice but to crawl out from under my hiding place and obey him.

With shaking legs, I rise to my feet, standing before him as I cover my chest with my arms. I’m still wearing the thin camisole, and it’s filthy. Plus, it leaves little to the imagination, and I would rather the alpha did not see my breasts, thank you.

I doubt he wants to see them anyway. I bet he’s not even that interested in me. That’s okay, though. I wouldn’t be interested in me either. I was never really that beautiful.

“Look at me.”

Another command and I do as the alpha says, peering at his face without meeting his eyes. We were taught to never look an alpha directly in the eyes at the OCC. To do so would get us a first-class ticket to isolation, and I’ve heard horror stories about that place.

Sebastian’s eyes rove up and down, and he seems to stop breathing for a moment. I’m tempted to look at him, yet I’m too afraid. The smell of steak taunts me as he continues to stare at me, and I wonder when he will pull out his knife and kill me.

My stomach rumbles again, and if these alphas aren’t going to kill me, then the hunger surely will. Sebastian surprises me next by passing me the plate, and I can’t help myself then.

I look into his eyes.

They’re as black as midnight, and I swear there are stars inside them.

They’re… beautiful.

His eyes expand the longer he stares at me, and what is happening? Does he mean to be threatening?

I’m so confused.

Prolonged eye contact is normally seen as a sign of aggression in alphas. But I swear his eyes grow softer the longer he gazes at me.

Finally, he tears his eyes away, and I don’t believe it. Did I win a staring match with an alpha?
