“Mr. Vesey,” I mumbled.

I didn’t have anything for Tiberius Vesey. He could be on fire, and I wouldn’t spit on him. He was one of those arrogant, condescending, and self-absorbed ass men who thought they knew everything. He irked all my nerves.

Typically, Ms. Serenity, the other kindergarten teacher, walked my class and hers to their weekly music class. Unfortunately, Ms. Serenity had a meeting with a parent, so I had to walk both classes. The arts corridor was my least favorite place in the school building.

“Hey, Girl,” Camilla, the school psychologist, said.

“Hey, Girl. What’s all this?”

“Some of the decorations for the RAW Festival of Art.”

“Do you need any help?”

“Now you know I can always use some help, so hold on to that offer. I’ve got this part.”

I grabbed my lunch bag from the refrigerator and sat down at the table with Camilla.

“I just dropped my kids off at music class. I’m going to eat now so I can work on their report cards when they are at lunch. I’m trying to get all my work done early,” I explained. “Speaking of work, did you hear back from Jordy’s parents?”

“Jordy…Jordy… oh! Jordan Green? I sent his parents the letter about him attending the advanced classes next year. I’m sure his behavior is related to his boredom in class.”

“Yes, I agree. He’s more advanced than most of the other kindergartners.”

“I believe they’ve replied. I sent several letters out in the past week. I’ll double-check to see if I’ve received something from the Greens,” Camilla responded.

“Thank you. I know you’re swamped with the end-of-year stuff and this festival.”

“Is there another word for swamped? Because that’s what I am.”

“It’s hard being all things to all people, huh?”

“Girl…For real!”

We both laughed.

“Hey, Momma.”

“Hey, Baby.”

I leaned over and gave her a kiss. I looked around the room and noticed I didn’t see any food containers.

“Did Terrance bring over the food from Miss Patti’s like he said he was?”

“No, he didn’t come over. He called and said he was coming but never made it.”

“Momma! Why didn’t you call me? You’ve been hungry all day?”

“You made me breakfast before you left for work. I knew you would be here around five, so I’ve been fine. I drank my water.”

“Momma. Come on! You can’t sit here and starve! You can’t take your medicine on an empty stomach! Are you in pain? Why didn’t Terrance come over here!”

“No, I’m not in any pain. I don’t know why he didn’t come,” Momma answered.

After snatching my phone from my purse, I yelled, “Siri, call Terry!”

“Calling Terry, mobile,” Siri replied.
