“I can,” I said, nodding up at him. Breaking his gaze, I looked at our surroundings and couldn’t help but be in awe of the scenery. “You know, this is some beautiful land you have here. I’ve never seen anything like it. But don’t you miss the city? I’m not sure I could survive living where it was so quiet.”

“The silence doesn’t bother me. It helps keep me calm when the dreams come to haunt me. The things I’ve seen done in the name of God and country would turn your stomach. I came home for peace, for quiet, and to rediscover who I was. A part of me will always be a Marine. That title was earned time and time again, and I’ll never stop being that man. But when I’m here, at home with my son, or sitting around a table with Gladys and Brandon and my Dad, eating a good meal and shooting the shit, well, that’s me as well.”

“Is that why you do what you do with Overwatch and Ebony’s work to protect women?” Maybe this ride would be the best thing for me. I was glad I had this time to get to know the real Clint.

“I think so. There’s a part of me that revels in what we do at Overwatch. It keeps my skills sharp and my focus strong now that I’m out of the Marines. Protecting rich people with too much time on their hands is simple work for me.”

I laughed, spreading my arm to encompass all the land surrounding us. “Aren’t you one of those rich people you’re talking about?”

Pulling me closer, he leaned his face down close to mine. “Absolutely fucking not. I’ll never be like them. Yes, we have money, but I know what it means to do a hard day’s work. I’ve gotten up at five in the morning every day since I was fifteen.”

“Maybe you’re different, I’ll give you that. Do the people you’re protecting know you’re practically Colorado royalty?”

He reared back in surprise, releasing his hold on me before taking a couple of steps back.

“I looked up your family last night. I was curious about the people I was staying with. There was only good stuff, by the way. It was interesting to see you referred to as the heir to RCX Industries.” I wasn’t ashamed of what I’d done to find out more about him. It shocked me to discover that Clint and his family were worth billions. Yet, both he and his father walked around in worn boots, stained blue jeans, and rode horses every day.

“Our wealth is generational.”

“That’s it? That’s all you have to say?”

“What else is there to say? Now, back to where we were,” he said, walking over to me as I took steps back. Within a few steps, my body was pressed up against the large tree. “I’ve been dying to do this.” Cupping my face in his hands, he leaned down. “If you want to stop me, now’s the time to do it.”

“Now, why would I do that?” Hell, I wasn’t going to look this gift horse in the mouth. I wanted this just as much as he did.

“Good girl,” he whispered, just before pressing his lips to mine. I moaned. He moaned. Clint pressed harder. My mouth opened for him, giving him the right opening to deepen the kiss. His lower body pressed against me, and I gasped. His thick length was hard as steel as he began a soft thrust.

I melted.

I wanted these clothes off, and I wanted him inside me, but even I knew that was crazy. But fuck, now I was determined to have Clint in my bed as soon as possible. He devoured my lips for a few more seconds before pulling back.

“If I don’t stop, I’m going to fuck you right here against this tree.”

Well, sop me up with a fucking biscuit. “I wouldn’t mind.” Okay, who was this hussy speaking? Because that didn’t sound like me at all.

“That’s not how the first time between us is going to be. But you can trust and believe when I do take you, you ain’t never going to want to leave my bed.”

I smirked. “Is that a promise?”

“Sweetheart, that’s a damn fact. Now, come on, let’s go back to the house and get you settled. I have some work to do.”
