“Gladys! We need to talk,” my father yelled.

“No, Bobby. What you did was out of line. It was my first time out with a man in years. I just wanted to feel beautiful for one night. But here you go, traipsing your big ass into the restaurant and ruined even that. Why couldn’t you let me have this one night?”

“Because I will never stand by and let another man have what should belong to me. You’re mine, Gladys. Even if you don’t want to admit it.”

Oh, hell no. I wasn’t sticking around for this. “And that’s my cue to leave. Dad, I’ll see you tomorrow. Goodnight, Gladys. If you need me,” I glanced over at my dad, who looked like a lion stalking prey, “just call me.”

Looking away from my dad for a moment, she gave me a hug. “Don’t you worry one bit about me. Your daddy doesn’t scare me. You two go on in while me and this crazy fool talk.”

I glanced over at Tamara. She looked as if she were waiting for the next scene in her favorite movie to start. “Come on, let’s head inside so they can finish.”

“Aw, come on, can’t we wait a little longer? I want to see what your dad does when he comes up the stairs. Gladys looks like she might be able to take him.”

“Absolutely not,” I growled. “It’s been a long ass day, you’ve been going for sixteen hours, and we need to get ready for the next thirty days. I still can’t believe we’re only one day one.”

“Well,” she sighed, “if this is what being on Sullivan Ranch is about, I can’t wait to see what happens tomorrow.”
