Chapter Seventeen: Not Gonna Work

Two months later

I let out a sigh as I was getting sick of being in here. I’d wanted to spend the day with Jaz.

Bones was holding court in the meeting room. “We’re back here again. I want to talk about weapons and how we’re going to handle things as a club, should we run into trouble with the trio of enemies we’ve now acquired. We’ve started making payments to the cartel, so let’s see how that goes.”

“Are all the firearms registered?” Bear asked.

“Partly, that’s what I need a few of you to check for me,” Bones asked. “Everybody has to stay on high alert and be ready for anything.”

The sound of glass shattering and bullets hitting the club brought us all to our feet in an instant.

“That’s them. Careful, stay right here!” Bones barked.

The shots stopped and the low throttle of bikes descended away from the Wheelz, minutes later. Every one of us was raring to go, but unprotected at the same time. We couldn’t just run down there.

Blood was pumping through my chest as I prepared for battle with my brothers.

“I think it’s safe,” Smoke declared as the noise level went back to normal. “Bones, we got the registered guns in the other room. Let me go get them,” he yelled out.

“Okay. Hurry up,” Bones commanded tersely.

Smoke ran out into the other room as Bones slammed his fist on the table in frustration.

A siren started to whir and I shook my head. The cops were already here. We didn’t even have time to assess the damage and prepare a plan.

“Everyone. We’re united on this. We don’t know anything, and that’s the truth,” Bones said under his breath.

We all knew the code. We protected one another.

Bones led us out and down the stairs. I followed and the rest of the guys came behind us. We entered the ground floor of Wheelz to see the front door shattered with gunshots.

Two officers were pacing around the outside entrance assessing the damage.

As we got closer, I could see there were six bullet holes in the door.

“We got a call, Bones. One of the shop owners called it in. You got enemies we don’t know about?” an officer asked in a calm tone.

Bones shook the officer’s hand. Most of the cops at Holbeck knew us all by name. “No, nothing new that we know of. Just the usual suspects.” Bones kept his cool as he spoke.

The officer raised his eyebrows. “We know.”

Bones chuckled nervously as Bear stood beside him, taking up space.

The officer peeked inside to the darkness of the club. “Doesn’t look like you have anything going on in here. What are y’all doing in here today?”

“We were having a quick meeting until we got this rude interruption. We were all on our way down the stairs, but you guys got here first. Way to protect and serve.” Bones was doing all the talking and trying to cajole the officer, but we were all ready to jump in if necessary.

The officer laughed as he ran his hand over a couple of the holes. “Well, looks like they got six shots off. So this just happened right now?” He scanned his eyes over each one of us.

“Yes. Looks like it. Now, we have to replace this door,” Bones confirmed.

“Don’t worry about that. You can replace a door, but you can’t replace a life.” The officer seemed sympathetic to us for some reason. Maybe we were making headway with them.

Bones nodded at him. “You're a hundred percent right about that,” Bones agreed.
