Chapter Twenty-Three

Was it campus security on a nightly patrol? Or had someone called the cops? Carter’s cursing and yelling hadn’t been exactly discreet.

I froze, contemplating my options. Should I run? I couldn’t leave Kenna behind to deal with the fallout. I suspected she would run alongside me if I chose to take off. Would we make it to her car? Where else was there to run off to? Inside the school? We’d never make it in time.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck!

The car rolled to stop, the bright headlights shining into our faces, making it difficult to see who was inside. Someone got out of the car, and my heart thundered in my ears. I squinted against the blinding lights, wishing whoever was behind the wheel would turn them off.

Tingles spread into every point in my body, and I knew exactly who the figure coming toward me was. “Brock?”

My boyfriend’s nostrils flared as he came to stand in front of me. “Firefly, you’ve got some explaining to do.”

This night was turning into a fucking circus.

A long exhale whooshed out of me.

“Kenna? Is that you?” Grayson had gotten out of the car and glared at Kenna and me. “What the fuck are the two of you doing here? Did you sneak out together?”

“No,” I said.

“Yes,” Kenna replied at the same time.

We shared a look and corrected our statements. “Sort of,” I admitted.

“Which is it?” Brock asked dryly, crossing his arms.

“Does it matter?” I replied. “Kenna and I had something to take care of. We’re done now.” I tried to move past him, but he wasn’t having it. I knew it had been a useless action. He wouldn’t let me leave without answers.

The fingers on my arm tugged me to his side. “What was so important that you had to sneak out in the middle of the night and not tell anyone?”

“Good question. Kenna?” I prompted, throwing the ball in her court. It was a total cop-out, but my brain went kaput. I couldn’t come up with a lie fast enough. Didn’t really want to. “This might be a good time to admit your little late-night hobby.”

She took the hint. I was trying to keep my promise to her. If they found out what we did to Carter… livid wouldn’t be strong enough of a word to describe what they would feel. “Right. Okay, so here is the deal. Josie caught me sneaking out and demanded to come with me or she would tell you that I left.”

“Uh, what?” I shrieked before I thought about or had the chance to tell my mouth to keep quiet.

She gave me a stern look. “It’s true. She’s a narc.”

“Kenna,” Grayson growled. “Get to the damn point.”

She rolled her eyes, keeping way calmer than I was. “So, you know the tagger who has been unveiling everyone’s secrets.”

I swallowed, unable to believe Kenna was about to spill her secret. She seemed so adamant before the night began.

Grayson sighed, losing his patience. “Yeah, what does that have to do with the two of you?”

“I’m getting to it,” Kenna bit back, glaring at our brother.

Brock’s hard gaze narrowed further. “Don’t tell me you’re trying to catch them red-handed.”

Kenna shook her head. “No. Up until tonight, it was just me. Josie had nothing to do with this,” she clarified. “I’m the one who has been leaving the messages at school.”

My gaze darted over my shoulder to where we’d left Carter. With the car engine, I wasn’t able to hear any more of his pleas to be released, or he had just given up. Regardless, we couldn’t linger out here for long.

Grayson tossed his hands in the air. “Really, Kenna. This isn’t time to joke.”

“I don’t think she’s kidding, are you, Kenna?” Brock said, his gaze shifting between my sister and me.
