She took another step away from me, bracing herself on the bar counter. “Adam, I’m—”

I rubbed the back of my hand over my lips. “Adelai—” A loud knock on my door stopped me from saying something stupid. “Don’t worry, Baddie. It never happened.”

She nodded and slipped by me to head for the door. Raising a hand, she shot me a coy look over her shoulder. “Whatnever happened? I don’t even know what you’re talking about.”

Relief hit me like a sledgehammer.

This was why we were friends. I could screw up, turn her friendly peck into something heavy, and she’d get over it in a heartbeat.

My girl was cooler than cool.
