"When this happened, he always said one day he’d be ready to get revenge," Kane said. "The deaths of the people he's killed, they're necessary to get him where he wants to go on this revenge mission. He's been harboring a lot of anger. He needed to vent it.And I agree, he won't stop until he has. If I could stop him, I would, believe me."

May felt a thud of disappointment. She had absolutely banked on the fact the father would know. But perhaps Dirk had deliberately not disclosed his location, knowing that he was going to go ahead with the revenge mission.

"Okay, in that case, here's another question," May tried. "You know your son. And I've told you who he's targeted so far. My question now is this. Who will he target next? Because he's lethal. And he's unstoppable. If we can save anyone, we need to try."

Kane thought for a while, tapping his fingers on the steel surface.

"There are two key figures in the case that I would expect him to want to end with, or work up to. But I can't say which of them he would target first. Perhaps I am totally wrong, and he will target neither. But I do know that those two individuals made him very, very angry."

"Who are they?" May asked.

"One is the judge who handed down the verdict. Judge Zackary. She's a senior judge, very well respected, and must be in her late fifties now."

"And the other?" May asked anxiously.

"The other is a key witness, who spoke up after the shooting. Her testimony swung the verdict, despite Sheila trying hard to provide evidence in mitigation. Her name is Sybil Hardy, and she's the owner of the import-export business across the road from the diner. She was looking out of her window at the time. She is probably around the same age, I think."

May let out a deep breath.

She felt more than grateful to Prisoner Kane for his willingness to help. And both these people sounded like strong potential targets.

May needed to get in touch with her team, immediately. They needed to locate these two women, and get to them as soon as possible, if they were to be saved. But she had no idea which of them the killer would target first.

"Thank you," she said.

She stood up and quickly left the room. The guard unlocked the door as she approached it.

Heading down the corridor, May broke into a run.
