She rolled her eyes, relieved he was joking about it rather than trying to push her into having sex when she didn’t feel like it. With so many changes happening at once, Phillip had been on her mind all day. The last thing she wanted was sex with another man, even if he was her husband.

Chapter Ten

They rode into work together in the back of Chase’s limo after spending the night at his San Francisco apartment. He checked the stock market and answered emails while the driver took them to Grayson Towers. She sat back, her body cushioned by the soft seat and watched the passing scenery. She couldn’t imagine living anywhere else, but she wasn’t going to have a choice soon.

They passed a trolley, and people tried to peer through the dark glass to see who was in the limo. That made Katie smile. She thought about rolling down the windows to say,it’s just me. Nothing to get excited about.

When they reached the office, Chase went his way and she went hers. She had a massive amount to do thanks to several incompetent temps. She answered important emails, balanced the books, and set up meetings for him.

“Greer!” Chase shouted from his office doorway.

The other two secretaries jumped. Alice’s hand went to her chest. She mumbled something under her breath about being too old forthis crap, and Marty leaped from her chair, nearly spilling her coffee on her computer keyboard.

“My office,” Chase said.

Katie crossed the room to stand in front of him, arms folded over her chest and a defiant lift to her chin. “I wish you would stop doing that.”

“You never complained before.”

“We’ve been over this. I was just an employee before.” She glared at him. “Now I’m your wife, and it’s Grayson. Not Greer.”

Surprise registered in his eyes. “I didn’t figure you’d want to use my name at work.”

“It’s my name, too. Why shouldn’t I use it?”

She pushed past him to enter his office and in an impulsive power move she circled the desk to sit in his chair. If they weren’t married, she wouldn’t dream of doing such a thing. Soft as whipped cream, his chair had a high back and a smooth swivel. She closed her eyes and relaxed. How did he stay awake all day?

“Comfy?” he asked in a teasing tone.

Sleepy and totally relaxed, she lifted her eyelids to find him hovering over her. Tension returned to her body, and a lump lodged in her throat. Chase had to be the sexiest man alive. The charcoal gray suit hid a lean, muscular body that most people would have to see to believe. She’d been pleasantly surprised when he took his clothes off that first time in Vegas.

Mentally kicking herself now, she sat up straight. Back to business. She easily returned to professional mode. “Why did you call me in here?”

“I just got off the phone with my mother, and she told me Poppy has an investigator digging into your past. I need to know one thing. Will he find anything she can use to screw with my plan?”

Her cheeks burned hot.How dare that vile woman sic a PI on me!

“There’s nothing,” she mumbled. But that wasn’t the point. The invasion of privacy made her angrier than anything had in a long time. “We have to do something about her.”

She walked around the desk, putting distance between them and leaving his chair empty so he could retake his rightful place. She smoothed her hands down her new pencil skirt. Today, she was dressed like a secretary and not a wealthy socialite with stock in a multi-billion-dollar company. She had thrown her matronly clothes away in favor of the soft and pretty outfits he’d provided.

Hands clasped on his desk, Chase watched her with his steely gaze in a way that made her feel both flattered and uncomfortable. He didn’t bother to hide his interest in her anymore, but it was only physical. Well, that and he wanted to have a baby with her to save his job.

“Let’s leave work early tomorrow and drive back to the lake house,” he said. “We need to conceive sooner rather than later so we can squelch whatever plans Poppy has.”

“Sounds good to me.”

He circled the desk to touch her as if he couldn’t keep his hands to himself. His fingers traced a seductive line from her wrist to her elbow and ended by grasping both her upper arms. He pulled her close. Any second his lips would descend, and she’d be lost in a passionate haze.

“Not here.” She gently pushed him back a few inches. “Not at work.”

“A thousand apologies.” His hands dropped from her arms. “I lose my head when I’m around you.”

The compliment warmed her from the inside out. She hoped her cheeks weren’t as pink as they felt, giving away her physical response to his proximity. “When we’re at the office, we need to keep it strictly business.”

“Agreed.”

She headed for the door. “If we are through here, Mr. Grayson, I will return to my work.”
