I act like this is the first time I notice Phoebe in the room. “You! You’re the one who bumped into me in the lobby. You took my wallet.” I pretend to reach for my phone. “I’m calling the police.”

Wilson holds up his hands. “This has nothing to do with me. Sorry, babe,” he says to Phoebe. “Maybe another time.” He rushes out of the room like his ass is on fire. Good riddance. I watch him enter the elevator before returning my attention to Phoebe whose eyes are the size of saucers.

“You did good.”

Her eyes widen further. “I did?”

“Yeah, sure. We need to talk about exit strategies, though.”

“Yes, please. I didn’t know what to do. His slimy mouth was all over me.” She shivers.

“I’m sorry. Are you okay? Are you sure this is something you can handle doing on a regular basis?” Best to ask now when the memory of his hands on her is fresh in her mind.

She waves away my concerns with a flick of her hand. “Please. Easiest job in the world.”

Well, okay then. “Let’s get out of here. There’s a beer calling my name.”

“And I’d like a drink with actual alcohol in it.”

A girl of my own heart.
