“How do you know?” I asked.

“Hello. Did you see his dilated pupils? And he kept sniffing and touching his nose. Classic.”

“And you would know?” I asked.

“Everyone does a little sniff,” she said, looking at Ethan.

He nodded sheepishly. “Yeah. Sure. At parties it can be fun. Or in the bedroom.”

“I thought you’d kicked it?” I asked him.

“I’m not doing it as much. I’m with Savvie. Luke was definitely coked out. He hardly touched his meal.”

“Do you think they’re in love?” I asked.

“Mm… Dad seems besotted. He’s a good-looking dude, I guess,” Ethan said.

“But he didn’t seem as into Dad,” I maintained.

Savanah frowned. “Do you think he’s after Daddy’s money?”

“I’m not sure. Dad’s set him up in a practice. He can afford it. It’s his money after all,” I said.

“Mother would hate him,” Savanah said, chuckling. “But then she’s got Will.” She shook her head. “Who saw that coming?”

“I did,” I said. “They’ve always been close.”

Savanah’s phone beeped. She peered down at it. “I’ve got to go and meet some friends.”

She pecked me on the cheek and then Ethan and headed off.

“What are you up to now?” Ethan asked.

“I’m going back to the village.”

“What, tonight? Now? Why not stick around? We can do some of the bars?”

“No. I want to get back. I’ve got an early start.”

He looked disappointed. “You’re not much fun.”

I gave him a hug and headed to my car which I’d parked a few blocks away.

For some reason, I peered through the window of a pub and froze on the spot. Theadora was seated in a booth with a girl and two men. One of the men sat close to her. Too close. He seemed very interested.

Why wouldn’t he be?

Jealousy froze my veins. We’d only been together yesterday and now she was out with a man?

Stepping away from the window, I leaned against the wall and took a deep breath.

How was it she was dating a guy?

Was that why she’d turned off her phone?

I tried calling her. Still no answer. I sent a text instead.

No response.

I’d entered villages where people were strapped with bombs, and yet I couldn’t walk into a pub and claim what was mine?

Mine?

Taking a deep breath, I squared my shoulders and entered the Irish pub.
