“Now that’s an interesting proposition, I should quite enjoy watching your breasts jiggle while you ride me. But I think perhaps I should fasten your habit so we can get out and enjoy what looks to become a fine day,” he said, reluctantly releasing her breasts and concentrating on the many tiny buttons that held the habit in place.
Verity enjoyed the feel of his fingers dexterously fastening the back of her habit, and stood still to make the job easier. The house’s staff would be rousing and getting everything that needed to be done for the morning. But they tiptoed down the stairs and out to the stables before anyone caught them sneaking out like naughty children.
Ethan’s chestnut stallion was already saddled and pawing at the ground eager to be off. The stableboy rushed to saddle her piebald mare and soon led her out. Ethan moved to boost Verity up, and when she was firmly seated, the duke mounted his own horse, and they set off down the lane leading to a small copse of trees.
“Are you a good rider?” he asked, his tone a bit tight.
“Yes.”
“Good, let’s race.”
They shot off together, trusting their horses. It was glorious, and they rode, galloping at top speed, other times trotting in companionable silence for several minutes. Ethan slowed his horse and she followed suit, staring in awe as the tiniest light appeared on the far horizon, then crept brighter and higher in the sky, painting the meadows and woodlands in bright hues of orange and yellow. Verity could not recall ever appreciating the beauty and peace of watching the sunrise, and a glance at Ethan showed his contentment.
Her heart stirred to know he shared this perfect peace with her, and the hopes she had felt for their marriage burned even brighter. He glanced at her, and he smiled. It wasn’t mocking or laced with sensuality. It was a simple smile, and her heart gave a violent tug toward him. She sensed something had formed between them, a unique thread of connection perhaps. They watched the sunrise, and then trotted back to the main house without speaking, and Verity would not have it any other way.
I am falling in love with you, Ethan. Will you love me back?
