He leaned forward. "I know you two have history, and while it's none of my business, there is a lot that's happened to Dorian that you don't know. He's seen too much evil and has done terrible things to save lives. He's seen too many horrors in this world, Marian, and while you both will have to work out your past between you, just remember leaving you was one of the toughest decisions he had to make."

"He didn't make it seem that way," I mumbled, and Killian smiled sadly.

"Of course, he wouldn't," he replied. "Dorian wants to save everyone while allowing no one to save him. He's changed a little, but that part of him never will. This thing with the vampire—Isaac, I've warned Dorian to stay away from him but knowing him, he's not going to be okay with Isaac around, but his dislike is coming from trauma none of us understand.”

“And none of us ever will because he won’t open up,” I said with frustration.

“He might,” Killian said while standing up. “Out of everyone, he might open up to you.”

I didn't know about any of this. What really happened to Dorian? Our relationship had crumbled, and I wanted to punch him in the face, but I wasn't a heartless beast. I knew how giving Dorian could be, so had he given his soul to his job and lost it?

Should I care if he had?
