Chapter Ten
Grayson
I wake up to Charlee’s brown hair tickling my face. She’s still sprawled out on top of me and I can tell that she’s still asleep. I look over at the clock and see it’s early, only 7:30 am. I wonder what woke me? Usually, I sleep in a little later than this.
I hear it then. A noise coming from downstairs. My arms wrap tighter around Charlee as I think about someone breaking into our house and trying to hurt my baby. The sound of footsteps draws near and I roll us over so that I’m in front of Charlee. I slip out of bed, pulling on my boxers as I cover Charlee up, making sure that the sheets are firmly around her. As soon as I tuck her in, Charlee wakes up, jerking up in bed.
“What are you doing?” She gasps.
“There’s someone in the house.” I whisper back as I creep over to the closet, looking for a weapon.
Charlee looks around for her clothes and we both freeze as the doorknob turns. I hold my breath, stepping between Charlee and the door as it opens.
“Mom?” I just about yell. My shoulders sag with relief as I stare at my mom.
“What are you doing here, mom?” I ask.
“It’s Sunday! I’m here for breakfast.”
My mom looks past me to Charlee and I can feel the nervous energy coming off of Charlee behind me. I realize that this is the first time that she’s meeting my mom and we’re both naked.
“Mom, why don’t you give us a minute.” I ask.
“Oh! Of course! I’ll meet you both downstairs.”
We watch as my mother smiles at us before she backs out of the room. I let out a breath and turn around to face Charlee who looks like she’s shell shocked. She’s clutching the sheet to her chest and staring at the door. Her blue eyes are wide and she looks a little pale.
“Are you ok, baby?” I ask as I walk closer to her.
“I’m ok.” She says quietly.
I sit down on the bed next to her and pull her into my lap. She cuddles into me, burying her face in my neck. I laugh at her shyness as she wraps her arms around my neck.
“It will be ok, baby. My mom is going to love you.” I kiss the side of her head as I untangle us. “Why don’t you get dressed and I’ll go downstairs and distract my mom.”
When she nods at me, I stand and drop a kiss on her lips before I pull on some clothes and head downstairs to meet my mom. I find her in the kitchen, already making breakfast for our usual Sunday meet up. She turns when I walk in and beams up at me. I’ve told her about Charlee when we talked this last week but I told her that she couldn’t meet her until Sunday. Then I got lost in Charlee and forgot all about what day it was.
“She’s beautiful, Grayson.” My mom says as I walk over to hug her.
“I know.” I smile.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.” She says looking sheepish.
“We weren’t- We were sleeping, Mom.” I tell her.
“So… how are things going with you two?”
“Amazing. I told her I loved her last night.” I say, smiling at the memory.
“And…?”
“And she loves me too.” I grin at my mom as she claps her hands and beams at me.
All my mom has ever wanted is for me to be happy and to have someone to spend my life with. She’s just as happy as I am that I finally found Charlee and that my life is starting to get on track.
“I’m going to ask her to marry me.” I tell my mom.
“I’m happy for you, dear.” She says as she wipes a few tears from her eyes.
