Zed chuckles. “Go back to sleep, my dirty Little Bird.”

I close my eyes, wondering if everything that just happened really was a dream. That none of it was real, and I’ll get up tomorrow for school like nothing ever happened.

ZED AND LEO LEFT AROUNDsix in the morning. Zed needed to get to work, and Leo had to get back to his dorm to shower before school.

Cleaning myself and getting dressed in the stupid school uniform, I head down to the kitchen to grab something to eat.

“These smell amazing,” I tell Mary, who pulls out a tray of muffins from the oven and sets them on the cooling rack.

“Thank you, my dear. Have one, but be careful, they’re still very hot,” she says, coming over and kissing my cheek. I smile at the lady who’s become more of a mother to me than the woman who birthed me. “I’ve got to get started on the boys’ rooms, have a good day.” She pats my shoulder before leaving the kitchen.

Licking my lips, I beeline for the banana chocolate chip muffins and grab one. I hiss at the heat of them and blow on it before taking a bite off the top.

A noise behind me has me spinning around, and I come face-to-face with Isaac.

“How did you do it?” he growls, his lips peeled back into a snarl. My eyes widen as I suck in a breath.

Swallowing the mouthful of muffin, I ask, “Do what?”

“You know what I’m talking about,” he spits. “How were you there? What kind of demon bullshit did you use to cloak yourself from sight.”

Shit, fucking shit! He’s talking about last night. He sensed me.

“I’m not going to tell anyone,” I whisper, not sure why I didn’t outright deny his accusation.

“Damn fucking right you're not. Because if you do, I will fucking end you, Demon Spawn. You have no idea what I can do when it comes to protecting the ones I love.”

“Don’t threaten me,” I snap back. “I said I was going to keep quiet. I’m not the monster you’ve convinced yourself that I am.”

“Oh yeah? I highly doubt that,” he laughs, taking a step back and turns to leave.

“You're only hurting them, you know that right?” I say, then curse myself for opening my mouth. He slowly spins around, and my dumb ass doesn’t shut up. “They deserve better than you fucking around on them. They deserve better than you. That’s not how you should treat your mates.”

“Shut the fuck up, you stupid bitch!” he roars, his hand clasping around my throat. I gasp, my eyes going wide as I struggle to breathe. But it’s not just because he’s choking me, cutting off my air, that I’m in shock. No, it's the zap through my body like it’s on fire. Like stars colliding. A spark.Thespark.

No. No, this can’t be happening. Not him. Anyone but him.

His eyes are wide with fear, anger, shock. He feels it too.

We both stand there gaping at each other, and his hand doesn’t loosen up on his grip.

I don’t know if he will let go, or if I’m going to pass out from lack of oxygen. But two things I know for sure – Isaac, my step-brother... is also my mate. And he is not happy about it... not one bit.

To be continued.
