vehicle. Like something was wrong.

“Quinn? What’s- are you- are you at the airport?”

“No.” The line was silent for a little bit. “Danica’s with

me. We’re in her car. She’s driving.”

“Oh my god. Did you miss the flight? I can try and help

you book another ticket. I’m sure there’s another flight leaving

today. It’s alright, we’ll get it figured out.”

“No. I- yes. I missed the flight. But it wasn’t an accident.”

Dallas sat down so hard on her couch it just about lifted up

at the opposite end. “What do you mean?”

“I mean- I- I don’t think this is going to work.”

“What’s this? The flight? Coming here? Or us?” Dallas

couldn’t believe that just a few minutes ago she was so happy

that she felt like she she’d separated into little particles of

joyful, radiant energy. Now she felt exactly the opposite. So

heavy that she might have turned to stone.

“I don’t know.”

That was echoed by a muffled sound in the

background, and Dallas figured that Danica was either giving

Quinn a piece of her mind or telling her to come out with

whatever she had to say.

“Are you sure? That you don’t know, I mean.”

“No. I- guess not. I’ve been thinking about it all

month. I want to make it work. I really do feel all these things

for you. That’s real. I let myself have all those feelings. I let

myself believe that it could work. I wanted it to work, but the

reality is, I know that it won’t.”

“But it’s only been- it hasn’t been that long. How can

you know?” Dallas felt like she’d just gone into shut down

mode. Her brain was probably trying to do it as a survival
