While his face darkens and he descends to a place where I may not be able to reach him, I attempt one last witty remark. “Good. Continue with that mentality, and you won’t take me for granted.” I take the alcohol prep pad and grit my teeth, running it over the not-so-angry gash at my arm.

Brody blows against my inflamed skin.

I soften, my grimace transforming into a smile, though it hurts like hell. “See, not nearly as deep as the one on your chest. The alcohol hurts more than anything.”

“Ye’re gonna run next time I fall asleep,” he mutters.

“Did you just hear me?”

“Wit? Nae.” He shakes his head.

“Listen.” I wince, the adrenaline leaving my bloodstream as I lift my arms. My body screams from the King Kong bashing it received. I clasp Brody’s angular jaw, and all I can think about is my tongue running the length of it—and his eyebrows. One day, I’m licking his eyebrow.

“Let me be clear, Brody. I gave you my heart. My love is unconditional.”

The tension in his face ebbs while I stroke his chiseled cheekbone. His powerful hands rest at my sides, and I find myself groaning out a tiny exhale of my own.

“If you have to consider me running at every turn while leading the life of a henchman, fine by me. That implies you’re well aware of my worth.” My eyes flicker over the man whose penetrating growl once made my blood run cold with fright. I smother another grimace, turning it into a smile, murmuring, “Now, I’m aware of your true fears, Brody MacKenzie.”
