“This is the best I can do,” Eric says, holding up the little doll who looks just like Mia.
I have to admit you’d have to either notice it’s not moving or get up close to notice it’s not a real person. As real as it looks, I hate this idea.
“Lucia can use this carrier. That way, I can put a gun inside it,” he adds. “Hopefully, she won’t need to use it. We’ll be right behind her and move in the moment she gets him out.”
“Did you check to see if he is there yet?”
“Yeah. The place is empty. He’s driving around. Lorenzo was by the docks for five minutes earlier, then he left, too. I think they’ll head there around the same time we do.”
We’re leaving in a few minutes, so it looks like everything is going as planned.
“Alright. I just hoped for a better way.”
“Let’s hope for this to be over soon.”
“That’s better.” I nod.
“Everything is good to go. William just checked in. He’s about to disable the whole system. The guard is about to check in with Thiago and tell him everything is fine. That’s exactly when we should leave. So, just worry about when we get to the plant. That’s what we need to worry about.”
“You’re right.”
I glance at Lucia as she walks into the room.
She’s ready.
She’s got her hair pulled back in a ponytail and is wearing a plain pink T-shirt and black jeans. She looks like she’s still in college. She’s barely out, so she would have that look.
Her words played in my mind. Her plea for forgiveness.
They come to me as I look at her and see how willing she is to help me.
“I’m ready.”
Eric puts the doll in the baby carrier.
“This is all you need.” He hands it to her. “And this.” He gives her the gun.
“I’ve never used one of these before.” She looks at me.
“It’s a Glock,” I tell her. “You just cock the hammer and let it go. That’s it. Aim for the head, shoot, and run. If bullets are flying, take cover. I will have your back. You hear me?”
“I hear you.”
“Okay. Let’s do this.”
