I strode over to him with supreme confidence, “You know as well as I do,Inever fuckedyou, Tyler.” I said at the same time I gave his shoulder a pat.

He looked back expectantly, like seeing me there didn’t surprise him in the least. His face was clear of the barest hint of remorse, but something I didn’t recognize hid in the back of his brown eyes. I continued despite the trickle of fear it caused, ”Youinvited yourself in, if you remember, and I told you I wanted to go to dinner. I was nauseous halfway through the date. What kind of man needs to lie about a woman sleeping with him when she’s sick? Are youthatpathetic?”

He faced me then, his face burned red with outrage and embarrassment. The surrounding audience was almost entirely women, their faces ranged from shock and disgust to excitement. “You are an insufferable, lying, conceited twat. I pity any woman stupid enough to sleep with you.”

My voice rang out steadily. “I hope your dick falls off.” I faced the room, gesturing around myself. “And the rest of you? You’re terrible people. You can all go fuck yourselves along with that guy.” I hiked my thumb over my shoulder, indicating the guy.

I turned and walked straight out. As the door swung shut, people talked, but I couldn’t care less what they said. Gasps and laughs echoed behind me. I don’t think a single one was on my side, but that was okay. I was on my side. Sometimes, that’s what doing the right thing for yourself means.

Summer was in full swing. The hot air swelled around me as I walked toward the bus stop. I didn’t get far before I realized someone followed me. I turned to see Sandy looking flustered. “You know you’re fired, right?”

“Yeah.” I laughed a little. “I got that before I opened my mouth. He’s going to get you sued one of these days.” Her face dropped. She understood I was right, and likely hoped that I wouldn’t be the one that did it. I left her there, standing stunned on the sidewalk. I didn’t know what I would do, but this didn’t feel like a mistake, at least not yet.
