“And how is the living arrangement?”

“Connor and Dex want to keep their own apartments. Well, Connor has an apartment, Dex has a house. But neither of them want to move in with Flynn.” She twirled a tiny flower between her thumb and forefinger, a gift from the impish little Seanan. “So Flynn and I are going to be the primary parents, but Connor and Dex are going to stay over whenever they want to. And I can rotate around to their homes whenever I want to.”

“It sounds perfect,” I replied, reaching out for her hand. “I’m so happy for you, and I’m a bit jealous.”

“Jealous?”

“Yes, you have three wonderful men who are doing everything they can to make it work for you. You have a baby on the way and more than enough love to share.” I looked into her eyes, trying to convey the idea that she had everything that I could ever want.

“You’ll find your happiness too,” she told me, pulling me in for a gentle hug.

I felt the protrusion of her stomach between us and made sure that all my movements were soft. I didn’t want to apply too much pressure and hurt the baby. When the grounds tour was complete, Bre showed me inside the mansion.

“This is where I used to sleep,” she said, pointing out a smallish room at the end of a hallway.

“But now you sleep in the primary bedroom?” I guessed.

“That’s right. I moved into Flynn’s room as soon as we found out I was pregnant.”

“It must be wonderful.” I sighed.

“It is,” she agreed. “Sometimes I can’t even believe it’s real. But then the baby kicks, and I know I’m not dreaming.”

I went back to my apartment satisfied that Bre was going to be all right. She might not come clubbing with me any time soon, but I had faith that we would get there eventually. She would have plenty of help looking after the child, so that if she wanted to get away for an evening, there would be no problem.

I tried hard not to be jealous, but the feeling came creeping in. To cheer myself up, I decided to order delivery. I couldn’t decide between Chinese or pizza, and as I was deliberating, my phone rang.

“Hello?” I answered. It was a university number, but not one that I recognized.

“Hello, Ms. Jackson?”

“This is she.”

“My name is Karla Brown from the University of Chicago. I work in the dean’s office.”

“Hi.”

“We’d like you to come back to the United States. We have a new assignment for you.”

“What about my research in Dublin?” I asked.

“That project is on hold for the moment. We’re going to send you a return ticket.” She was very matter of fact, in a way that invited no argument.

“Okay,” I agreed, listening to the details of the flight.

That was the end of my adventure in Ireland. In a few days, I would be back on American soil. I wondered if there was time to see Bre again, but even if there wasn’t, I felt like we’d left things in a good place. It was time to start another chapter of my life, one that would bring me closer to home. I welcomed the change. It was good to leave, but it would be good to return. Texting Bre to let her know about the new development, I told her goodbye.

She wished me luck and told me that I would always have a place to stay if I ever came back to Dublin. I wondered what it might be like to spend the night at that mansion, to go to sleep in one of the many guest beds and wake up to the mist in the morning. All that would have to wait. It was time to move on.

I packed my bags and called the professor that I was working with to inform him of the university’s decision. He had already spoken to HR, and he knew that I was being reassigned. He asked me to put in a good word for him back in Chicago. I agreed. Things were happening so fast, there was little I could do but go along for the ride.

I took a rideshare to the airport and boarded the plane. My luggage was already checked and would be waiting for me upon arrival. I closed my eyes, feeling the sluice of air as the airplane took off from the ground. A few minutes later, we were cruising at altitude, and the whole wonderful, magical Irish journey had come to an end.
