“I’m sorry,” I said again.

“I’m not mad at you, sweetheart.” He kissed me softly on the lips, proof that this accident would not come between us.

I wanted to weep with relief. I was sure Seanan would be fine. She had walked into the hospital on her own, and aside from that one brief episode immediately after the injury, she hadn’t lost consciousness.

I allowed Connor and Dex to help me down the hallway. Leaving Seanan in good hands, I turned the corner, giving in to my exhaustion. It had been a tense few hours, and my insides were wound so tight I had trouble even breathing. I held on to Dex’s hand as Connor led the way outside.

CHAPTERTWENTY-FOUR

CONNOR

I helped Bre into my car, arranging with Dex to meet us at the mansion. Checking to make sure she was okay, I eased into the driver’s seat and sparked the ignition. I couldn’t tell if Bre was crying or not. She seemed very tense, and her eyes were focused on a spot on the horizon.

“Are you okay there, darling?” I asked.

She didn’t respond.

I pulled out of the hospital parking lot, shifting into gear. The roads flew by as I angled toward her home. It wasn’t too far, although Flynn’s desire to be outside of the city made for slow travel. There were plenty of winding roads and picturesque hills, perfect for sightseeing but bad if you wanted to make it to your destination quickly.

Finally, the front gates emerged from the trees, open as always. I coasted inside, parking right out front. One of the household servants came out to find us, and I explained what had happened. He suggested parking the car in the garage, and I handed him the keys.

Helping Bre out of the passenger seat, I saw Dex pull up behind us. He was riding a motorcycle, something that I always teased him about. He looked so badass in his leather jacket and his helmet. I really wanted a chance to kiss him without Bre in the mix. But I knew that wasn’t possible, at least not yet.

Together, we helped our lady up the stairs and into the living room. I set her down on the couch and sat down beside her. She immediately turned to grab my lapels, burying her head in my chest and crying.

I put my arms around her to soothe her. It must have been a terrible experience, to see little Seanan hurt. I couldn’t think of the words to comfort her, so I looked at Dex. He left us sitting there, wandering out into the foyer. I shook my head, wondering what he was up to. I knew he was focused on getting something to help Bre; I just didn’t know what it was.

I continued holding our woman until Dex returned with a steaming mug of tea. I watched as he crossed the room to the dry bar. Hunting around beneath the counter, he found what he was looking for. Holding it up, I saw that it was one of the most expensive whiskeys on the market.

“Is that Pappy Van Winkle?” I asked.

Dex studied the bottle. “It is.”

“Are you opening it?” I gasped.

“It’s open already,” he replied.

I watched as Dex emptied an entire shot of thirty-thousand-euro liquor into the tea. He brought it over to Bre and crouched before us, handing it to her like a chalice. She accepted it, still mute. Taking a sip, she winced, not expecting the burn. Either she hadn’t seen Dex spike the drink, or she hadn’t bothered to consider the consequences.

The drink did the trick though, a moment later, she began to recover. “I’m so confused why the three of you are together” were the first words out of her mouth.

“We were actually in a meeting discussing the situation when we got the call,” I replied gently.

“We’re going to make this work,” Dex said, sitting down beside us.

“Flynn too?” she asked.

“Flynn too,” I promised.

“I’m sure he’s going to fire me,” she said tearfully.

“He’s not going to fire you, darling,” I replied.

I knew enough about matters of the heart to realize it would take much more than an accident for Flynn to want to kick Bre out of his life. The man was lovestruck. And whatever happened with the little girl, I was sure that Bre had done all she could. She cared for the child as if Seanan were her own.

“But I should have paid more attention to where the ball was going. I should have stopped her before she reached the post. I should have…” She trailed off, not sure what else she could have done.

“It sounds like an accident,” I replied. “But if it makes you feel any better, both Dex and I have plenty of money. You can come work for us if Flynn fires you, which he definitely won’t do.”
