Chapter 4

XANDER

I clenched my jaw and slowly stood up.

That fucking lying asshole.

I steadied my breathing. “Are you telling me that your dad has become sort of... vampire? Wanting to suck our blood as a power-booster for his magic?”

My wolf rose up ready to fight at the mere mention of the threat we were facing. I pushed him down. I needed to be able to talk, and Michael wasn’t the enemy, despite our introduction to the guy. At this point, given Monique’s needs, he was more likely to become a pack mate than anything else.

Michael’s nostrils flared as he inhaled sharply. “I’m so sorry.”

Monique jumped to her feet beside me, so we were all standing facing the fire Michael had built.

“So, what do we do, Michael?” she asked, her voice soft and trembly.

He glanced down to our mate. “You need to leave here. All three of you. Tonight.”

My jaw dropped. “You want us to leave?”

Michael met my eyes, and I could read the worry in his. “If you don’t leave tonight, you’ll never get out. My father expects you to leave tomorrow, because that’s what you’ve said you’ll do. But when he realizes how important you are to his plans for power...”

Kyle and I shared a look that told me we were of the same mind.

“Right, let’s go.” I grabbed Monique’s hand. “Grab what you need. Then we’re off.”

Michael stepped closer. “No. You should leave at night, under the cover of darkness. My father doesn’t travel at night, and I’m assuming with your wolf genes you’ve got decent night vision.”

I scoffed. “Decent is an understatement.”

We were wolves, which gave us lots of advantages at night.

“Then you should stay. Wait. Plan. Then around eleven—run.” Michael’s tone was strong, but I still worried about his motivation.

“We’re taking Monique with us,” I said, not stopping to check with our mate. We’d talked about the fact we wouldn’t be letting Monique go, after Michael had left. She wanted us, so she wasn’t staying here. We needed to get back to our pack, and she wanted to travel and see the world.
