That's the great thing about relationships. Sometimes everything can be said without words coming out of your mouth. Sometimes the simplicity is in what’s not being said.
Sara toldme to take a shower, and I’m not going to lie. I was hoping she was gonna join me.
Instead, when I get out, Sara is cooking us pasta and has a bottle of wine open. I shouldn’t keep getting surprised by this woman, but I am. We’ve wasted so much time over these missing years.
I was an idiot. I quietly sit down and grab hold of the book I was reading and enjoying, and then after a few chapters, I sneak up on her.
She gives me the biggest smile when she notices me. It warms my heart to see that smile again.
I never want to not see it again.
“Am I going to have to buy another copy of my book?”
“No, I’ll probably finish it tonight.”
“Huh.”
“Tell me if it's not ok?”
She gives me a knowing smile. Then she surprises me again.
“No it’s fine. I’m just wondering how far into the book are you?”
I look at the book and where I put a bookmark in before.
“About forty percent, maybe. Why? Have you not finished it? Is that the problem?”
She bursts out laughing.
I’m failing to see what is so funny.
“No, I’ve actually already read it. I finished it on the plane. I was just wondering. You carry on reading it.”
She turns back to the counter, stirring the sauce.
Now she has me at a disadvantage. She’s read this book.
“Did you like the book?”
Her cheeks go a shade pinker and her breath hitches a little.
“I loved it. It’s by one of my favorite authors. You go and relax in the living room, I’ll shout you when it is ready.”
I don’t need to be told twice. I get so engrossed in the book, Sara has to come in to me to check I’ve not fallen asleep.
We enjoy our meal, and we chill out, reading, just enjoying each other's company the rest of the night. I’m not gonna lie, it feels good.
It feels perfect.
