“I wasn’t planning on it.”

“We never plan fuck ups. Just… don’t.” Her eyes had suddenly grown serious, and Jack had to swallow hard. He felt a little threatened.

“I won’t.” Seemingly satisfied, Emilia left him to hit the dance floor again. Scanning the room, his eyes fell immediately on Mia. She was just breaking away from a group of people, making her way towards him once again. He felt a heat deep in his belly, knowing that she had been watching him. Wordlessly, she took his hand and led him to the dance floor. He took her in his arms and they swayed silently to the music, enjoying each other.

“Mia?”

“Mmm?”

“Why don’t you come back to my place later?”

She pulled back so that she could get a better look at his face. “Back to your place? Tonight?”

“Mmm hmmm.”

“Tonight? Really?”

“Mmm hmm. It’s all I can think about for weeks and it’s only gotten worse. I want you in my bed.”

“Oh,” he thought he saw her smile, but she’d bowed her head. “I haven’t thought of much else either, to be honest.”

“So, you’ll come over?” The seconds she needed to decide felt like an eternity to Jack.

“All right.”

He couldn’t help the grin that spread across his face and he twirled her out in a spin, pulling her back in so that their bodies collided. To everyone else, it would have seemed as if she stumbled as he turned her too quickly. To him, it was a promise.

“I’m going to leave now. You can come whenever you want.”

“Promises, promises.”

A barking laugh escaped him. “Touché. You take all the time here you need. I’ll be waiting up for you. I’ll see you later.”

“Yes, apparently you will.”

Nodding, he walked away from her, once again having to pull himself together so as not to take her with him. The grin on his face, as he said his goodbyes and got in the taxi home, wouldn’t fade. He was going to have Mia. Tonight. He couldn’t wait. As he arrived home and started preparing some food for them, he realized he was well on his way to falling in love with Mia Emerson. And he didn’t mind a bit.
