“I can’t answer that, either. I was there during you and Joel. I saw you two together a lot. I could see how much you two were perfect for each other and how much he loved you. I was as shocked as everyone else around you when you two split. I’ve only seen you and Marc together this week. I can see that he cares deeply about you and didn’t want to hurt you. He seems excited about the wedding, but I really can’t say that I know enough to say he’s the one for you.”
“He should have said something to me the second he knew you and I are friends. Instead he lied to me about you.”
“Because he didn’t want you to think there was more to what happened between us than there was.”
“No.” Maggie shook her head and frowned. “The more I think about it, the more I realize he didn’t want me to know he was cheating on his ex.”
“That doesn’t mean he’ll cheat on you. He asked you to be his wife. That means something.”
Maggie pressed her fingers to her forehead and the aching headache building there. “Even before Joel called today, I was questioning if Marc’s behavior this week meant he wasn’t the right man for me. I still love Joel, but he didn’t come to me with his change of heart until he found out I was getting married.” She looked up to the ceiling and sighed. “I don’t know what to make of all of this. I need time to think.”
The door at the back of the church opened. She and Rose both turned and spotted Gray walking in, his gaze finding Rose and a big smile breaking out on his face.
“I’ve spent time with Gray at family dinners over the last many months. I’ve never seen him so relaxed and happy as he is around you,” Maggie said.
Rose patted Maggie’s knee. “Marc always looks happy when he’s with you.”
“Really? You thought he seemed cheerful and at ease at dinner last night?”
“Okay. Maybe not then. But I think that has everything to do with me and Gray and not you.”
“Exactly.”
“It will get better.”
“What will?” Gray asked, stepping up behind them and leaning down to kiss Rose. “Hi.”
“Hi,” Rose said, blushing and gleefully smiling up at Gray.
Maggie turned to Rose. “I think if you and Gray got married on Saturday, even though you’ve only known each otherfor a week, you’d be a very happy couple forever.” She stood and walked away, needing some space to sort through her thoughts and feelings. She only had two days until she said, “I do,” and before she did that, she needed to be sure whose, if anyone’s, wife she wanted to be.
