“You know, I can do some things you can’t do well.”
“I don’t doubt that for a minute, Kit. I’m sorry, but the idea of you behind the wheel is laughable. I think I’d take my chances with the bad guys.”
“One of these days, Liam Fowler, you’re going to need me to drive you somewhere, and you’re going to have to grovel.”
Sully, used to our bickering, ignored us. He was on his computer, going through an Excel sheet I couldn’t make sense of, so I stuck to antagonizing Liam, and he returned the sentiment. We were almost at the location, a one-story building in the seedy parts of Highloborn Street, when Sully shut down the computer.
“You remember your cover story?” he asked.
“Got it all in here.” I tapped my left temple, then snapped at Liam. “Say one word, Liam. Just one.”
He laughed but kept his lips sealed.
“I swear you two are no better than kids,” Sully muttered. “I’m trying to be serious here. We have to make sure everything goes according to plan to minimize any risk to Kit.”
“Babe, relax. Nothing’s going to happen.” I cupped his cheek. “Besides, I’m a pretty talented actor.”
“Says the guy you’re sleeping with.” Liam chuckled. “You remember that, Sullivan. He’s practically admitting he’s been faking it.”
“You’re always welcome to watch,” I offered.
He made a choked sound, and I smiled, satisfied. I’d finally shut him up.
“We’ve been through this several times.” I returned my attention to Sully. I touched the pendant around my neck. “We already tested the camera, and it works fine. You can hear everything I say, so you know exactly where we’ll go, and you’ll ride in and save me, like my prince in shining armor.”
“More like a bulletproof vest, but sure.”
His ability to joke about this was a good sign. I leaned forward and kissed the corner of his mouth, then whispered in his ear, “Besides, think of all the fun we’ll have tonight. You’ll be able to hear everything he says to me about what he wants to do to me. You’ll love that.”
“I’ll love you being safe and unharmed more.”
How lucky was I to land a man like this? I kissed Sully, and he hauled me up onto his lap to straddle him.
“Hey, you’re not exactly alone,” Liam said. “We’re here.”
I climbed off Sully’s lap and settled back into my seat.
This was it.
Whatever happened, I couldn’t screw this up for Sully.
Liam slowed down in front of the building. I didn’t know where he’d gotten a cab, but it was perfect to keep up the pretense. I opened the door, but Sully grabbed my hand and tugged gently.
“Be safe. If you feel uncomfortable or assess the situation as too dangerous, you let us know immediately. We’ll get you out of there.”
I nodded, and he released me. I stepped out of the cab and made a show of paying in case we were being watched. If there was one thing Sully had taught me in the past five days to prepare for tonight, it was not to take anything for granted. Eyes were everywhere.
“Have a good night,” Liam said, pocketing my change.
Asshole.
But I wouldn’t give up his friendship for anything in the world. He and Sully had roped me into their lives, and now I couldn’t imagine my life without them both. They had different roles but were equally important.
The front door was a heavy iron contraption that would take a warhead to break down. I caught the old-fashioned knocker and banged it against the door the way Nolan always did it. After the seventh clang, I stood back and waited. The door groaned as it opened, and I plastered a smile on my face.
The doorman frowned. Then his features cleared, and he smiled at me. “Hey, I remember you. You’re one of those escorts the men like.”
I giggled. “Yes, that’s me.” I bit my bottom lip and fluttered my false lashes at him. “Though can you blame them?”
