“No, but he wouldn’t care. We’re only together for the sex.”

Maddie couldn’t imagine such an arrangement but to each their own.

A thoughtful smile spread across Lisa’s face. “Tobias is my soul mate.”

Outside of books, she’d heard no one refer to a person as their soul mate. “What happened between you two, then?”

“Tobias said it wasn’t working out between us.” Lisa gulped some coffee and then placed the cup back on the table. “But I know he didn’t mean it. He just got nervous. You know how guys can get.”

At least to Maddie, it sounded as if Lisa’s ex didn’t share her opinion about them being soul mates. But hey, if Lisa wanted to believe they were, she could.

“Can I have another cup?” Lisa removed her purse from her chair and unzipped it.

All the cream Lisa added must have cooled the coffee down considerably because she’d seen no one finish a cup of hot coffee so quickly.

“Of course.”How could she say no? “I got some red velvet white chocolate chip cookies at Sugar and Spice. Do you want one?”

She’d been itching to eat one since she walked out of the bakery. And nothing went better with coffee than a cookie or two.

“Why not?”

Maddie’s cell chimed as she waited for Lisa’s coffee to finish brewing. She suspected it was Alex wanting to know what Keith’s answer had been last night, because unless they’d enlisted Superman’s help, there was no way the guys had already finished up at Salty’s house.

Coffee and bakery box in hand, Maddie turned. “Does he—”

While Maddie might have imagined Lisa frowning earlier, she wasn’t imagining the look of hate on Lisa’s face now or the gun in her hand.

Regardless of whether Lisa had experience with firearms was irrelevant at this distance. If Lisa pulled the trigger, a bullet would strike Maddie somewhere. And since Maddie’s Glock remained locked in the safe where she kept it whenever at home, she had no way of defending herself.

But would Lisa do it?

Pointing a gun at someone was one thing. Pulling the trigger and shooting a living human was another. And while people thought they could shoot someone, it often turned out they couldn’t. Unfortunately, there was no way of telling which category Lisa fell into. All Maddie could do was hope her so-called friend fell into the second.

Maddie considered and immediately dismissed tossing the hot coffee at Lisa. While it might distract her momentarily, it might also piss her off. And it was never a good idea to anger an unhinged individual who had a gun pointed at you.

If she got Lisa talking, though, maybe she’d lower the weapon. Whether or not it worked, it might give Maddie time to come up with some way to avoid having a 9mm bullet lodged in her body. Or worse, for Keith to come home and find himself on the receiving end of Lisa’s gun.

“What’s this about?”

Maddie ruled out a robbery attempt. If the woman wanted any money or jewelry in the house, she would’ve pulled out the weapon when she walked inside. Had she helped put someone Lisa cared about in prison while working for the FBI? Over the summer, someone had gone after Kenzie because her dad had sent him to prison. Or was this somehow related to an assignment she’d worked for Elite Force?

“You.”

Not much of an answer.

“I don’t understand, Lisa. I thought we were friends.”

Slowly, Maddie set the cookies and coffee on the table. Two free hands might not make a difference, but it couldn’t hurt either.

“If we’d met under different circumstances, maybe we could’ve been.”

Judging by the sincerity in her voice, Maddie guessed Lisa believed what she said. However, her response still didn’t explain why the woman stood in Maddie’s kitchen pointing a gun at her.

“We still can be. Put away the gun, and I’ll forget I saw it.” Maddie doubted Lisa would comply, but it was worth a try.

“It’s too late.”

Maddie’s cell beeped, telling her she’d received another text message. She should’ve put the device in her pocket when she left the table. Then maybe she could activate the SOS emergency feature and get some help.
