“See how some people do their job? Minimal fucking words, no arguments, and the job gets done.”

I shrugged. “I’m sure I’ll be that jaded one day. If I survive. I’ll ask again. What are you planning to do to this poor neighbour of his? They’ve done nothing wrong.”

“Everyone does something wrong.” Seb muttered, smirking at me.

“The point is… they might find that this postcard disappears from their residence, sometime in the next twelve hours.”

I sighed. “Please don’t say you’re sending me in. I have no experience with breaking into places. The one and only time I tried, Marco and Lenore kicked my ass.”

Samuel grinned at me. “Nah, we’ll send in the professionals. Right, you look dead on your feet. Get home. Get some sleep. Maybe have a nice wank to calm you down. Nige will text you, when the postcard problem is sorted. We’ll also see what he can do about removing that photo from Jeff’s phone. If he can’t do it remotely without cloning it, you’ll have to snatch it when you see him next, and do it manually.”

Fuck my life.

“Now sod off, will you?” I let myself out.

When I was in the car, I checked my phone again for messages from Julie, and there were none. And that’s how I ended up on her doorstep almost an hour later.

She reluctantly opened the door to me, and I could see that she was just as dog tired as me, so I just pushed the door shut, locked up, and led her up to her bedroom, which I’d scoped out the first night I checked the place for her. Pushing her in the direction of her bed, I shed my shoes, socks, and jeans, and then I slid in beside her.

She stared at me with nervous eyes, but all I did was pull her against my chest, and kiss the top of her head. “Sleep, little angel.”
