Cyber has my information on the woman by going through surveillance cameras and says she’s in an apartment building down the road from the main street. That’s fucking good to know she’s not just breezing through so I have time before she attempts to give me the slip.

Chapter Three

Angel

My heart slams in my chest as I drive back to my temporary apartment in Steeleville. Three weeks of investigation and I’d been caught. After six months as a private investigator, that had never happened to me. Being made out wasn’t something to be proud of and could ruin my shot at my entire case going up in flames.

I can’t get my breathing under control, so I pull off to the side of the road to gain my composure. When Daniel “The Beast” Miller showed up at my employer’s office, needing someone to keep tabs on a girl, I’d been hesitant for many reasons. After all, spying on a woman should have a good reason behind it, and two, he was a high-profile individual, making the stakes greater. With his explanation, I took the job and now I’ve gone ahead and blown it because the handsome cowboy spotted me on his ranch.

As soon as I make it to the apartment, I lock myself inside and breathe long, drawn-out breaths, hoping that Danny isn’t too angry with me. Maybe I’ll stall, seeing how long I can avoid telling him about the confrontation with the cowboy.

It’s only been three weeks since I started this assignment, and I’m already blowing it. It’s not as if it's my real job, but I need to keep my boss, Mr. Richter, believing I’m good at what I do.

I toss my phone onto the sofa and lay my head back against the cushiony material. This assignment was too much for me the second I crossed paths with Raymond Williams. He’s a menace to any woman’s panties. I’m surprised Sammie isn’t throwing herself at him. From what I can see, there’s no romance there, but maybe it’s because she does have a thing for Danny like he believes she does. Their relationship is complex and complicated for no reason from what I can see, but I don’t know either of them, so I’ll continue to keep my head down and do my job until Danny gets wind that I’ve fucked up.

Strangely, Danny’s more accepting and understanding than I expected from a man who beats people for a living and I’m grateful for it. Relief washes over me, but it doesn’t change my mind about ending the assignment sooner than he wants because the truth is, she’s safe.

The pounding on my door interrupts my call with Danny and I already know who it is. It’s as if I can sense him. Besides, who else would know to look for me here?

Ending the call with my client, I take a deep breath and try to calm my breathing down. My dreams were filled with that rugged cowboy and I woke up in a sweaty mess, craving his touch. I take a peek through the peephole and find Ray, my sexy cowboy with a dirty smirk on his face.

“Open the door, Angel.” The impatient growl sends pleasure racing through me, reminding me of my dreams. They were vivid, heated, and intense as his strong hands gripped me with the intent to possess every inch of my body. Of course, I woke up before anything happened, but still, I couldn’t shake the image from my brain.

“I’m coming, cowboy,” I call out, brushing my fingers through my hair and tucking several strands behind my ears.

“Not yet.” A deep chuckle follows, and I’m kind of hoping he can keep his word.

Damn him. The man has my pussy on attack mode. I’m feeling so heated that I’m ready to jump on him and demand he give it to me. It’s stupid how hot and bothered I am by this overgrown sweaty piece of man meat.

“Are you done with the sexual innuendo?” I question the second I hold the door open for him, standing with one hand holding the wood, trying to maintain a hint of dignity and not let him see how his words have turned my body into mush.

“Not in the least, Angel face. Now, are you ready to go for a ride?” He just waltzes past me as if I wasn’t standing in the way, attempting to block his entrance.

“I don’t know if I’m up for horseback riding after seeing how big they are up close.”

“I wasn’t talking about the horses, but it’s pretty big too.” He winks and then takes in my apartment, attempting to play it cool as he walks toward the window.

“All sex talk with you.” I roll my eyes, but they end up lingering at his midsection. Damn it, if he wasn’t turned, I might get a chance to see how big it is.
