We both laughed over that. “You okay? I saw you and your mom having a moment before Aaron pulled me away from the window.”

“Yeah, it’s okay. Good, actually.” I slowed to allow a jackrabbit to dart across the roadway. “She was totally cool with it.”

“It being the fact that you’re gay and hooking up with Peter Pasty here?”

“Peter Pasty?”

“Yeah, Aaron called me that.”

“The shit he says,” I said around a chortle. “You are pretty pasty.”

“Compared to you, yeah, I am. So it’s good now. You’re out with the fam. Next you come clean at work then the world, and then I can grab your ass right in the middle of the Copper Falls Free Library. See how good I am for you?” He gave me a wink, falling into crooning along with Conway. He didn’t know the words and his voice lacked in comparison, but there was nothing else about him that was deficient. We made a small pitstop along a deserted stretch of dirt road on Prairie Smoke land just so he could show me how good he was for me. Turned out he was incredibly good.
