Darn.
“Is this feta cheese? And olives?” He picked up a few things from the exam table.
I shrugged and said, “I’m really not sure, Doc.”
He leaned his hip against the table and crossed his arms. “Lexi, Lexi, Lexi. I can’t give her more shots if she’s already had them. You need to level with me.”
Darn.
“Fine,” I said and let out a loud sigh, “but you won’t tell your brother?”
“Nope, vet/client privilege.”
I narrowed my eyes at him. “Is that even a thing?”
“It is now.”
All I could do was hope he’d keep his promise. “Okay, I bought her from a breeder.”
He pushed away from the table. “Do you have her papers?”
I rummaged around in my bag for everything they gave me.
After Barnes looked over the papers, he chuckled and said, “Purebred Golden Retriever. I highly recommend this breeder, Lexi. But I also happen to know their waitlist is miles long.”
I smiled at him and said, “I guess I got lucky.”
He stared at me for a moment. “Did you use your dad’s name? Or offer them an exorbitant amount of cash?”
“Both.”
He laughed and handed me back the papers. “Lady, I like your style.” After the papers were safely hidden back in my bag, he spoke to me again, “I’m guessing you did this to cheer up your husband?”
I smiled guiltily up at him. “It’s worth a try, right?”
“Genius move, Lexi.” His eyes looked me over, then he laughed.
I couldn’t exactly blame him. After wrestling with a puppy in a dirt pile—I was a mess.
“I have to admit I was a bit skeptical at first. But now I see that you really do love my idiot brother. You’re exactly what the doctor ordered.”
We’d barely steppedinside our door when Gigi and Beau barged in behind us.
Well, Gigi barged.
Beau mostly just stared.
We let them in and I explained the baloney story about how I’d found the puppy at the dumpster, etc.
They seemed to buy it, just like Trey had.
“Omigosh, Beau! Look at her sweet widdle facie,” Gigi spoke in babytalk while she hugged the puppy.
Beau gave her a grave, serious look. “Geneviève, no.”
“But Angel and Gordie need a brother or a sister.” Gigi kissed the side of the puppy’s head.
“They have friends at daycare. And now, this puppy. That’s plenty of socializing.”
