Chapter 24: Ajax

My heart still hadn’t settled back into a regular beat. Finding out Jessica had been taken right out from under our noses and not knowing what was happening to her had almost driven me insane. To find her fighting for her own survival and that she’d killed one man had stunned me. I never wanted her to have that on her conscience. It was my job to protect her and do the dirty deeds if needed.

The ride back to the compound didn’t take that long, but I felt like it was forever. I hated that she was in the van with that bitch, May. I wanted to hold her. However, the bike wasn’t safe for her in her condition. I had to not be selfish. I made sure to ride right next to her window the whole way back. I could see her dosing in the passenger seat with her head against the window.

I roared through the gate ahead of the van so I could be ready to help her out of it. The guys would take May to the Cellar. She could cool her heels there for a while until we decided what to do with her. I wasn’t opposed to a bullet between the eyes, but I knew we needed to find out how they had gotten inside the compound. We had a hole somewhere in our defenses that needed to be shored up.

I eased open the door and unhooked her seatbelt. She slid out into my arms. I didn’t even let her feet touch the ground. I lifted her up in my arms and took her straight inside. We were greeted by the other old ladies. They had to flock to her and make sure she was alright. Once they were reassured she was, they settled down. I insisted on taking Jessica to my room. I wanted her to be checked out.

“Zara, will you come with us and check her out?”

“Of course, Ajax. Let me grab my bag out of my car and I’ll be right there.” As she went to get it, I took Jess to my room.

“Baby, is there anything I can get you?” I asked as I took off her shoes and laid her on the bed.

“No, I just feel really tired. Maybe some food later. And I want a shower as soon as Zara is done. Don’t look so worried, Ajax. I’m sure the baby is fine.”

“I need to be sure both of you are, Jessica. Then I’m going to have to meet with the guys and see what happened. How they got inside the walls and what we’re going to do.”

“You mean what you’re going to do as in getting rid of her?”

“I can’t tell you more, Jess. That’s club business,” I warned her. She rolled her eyes.

“Fine, but I’m not stupid. I know you guys aren’t squeaky clean. But in cases like this, I understand why. I’m fine with whatever you guys decide is best. I just want her out of my life for good.”

I kissed her softly. “She will be. I promise.” A soft knock on the open door showed us that Zara was back, and close on her heels was Demon. She was ignoring him. She came over to the side of the bed and shooed me away.

“Give me some room. I won’t bite her. I need to check her out. Jess, did you get hit or fall?”

“Other than the knock to the head, no I wasn’t hit. As for a fall, I did fall to the ground, but I landed on my back and not my stomach. She was a little more active earlier but has settled down now.”

“Do you have any pain anywhere?”

“My head aches and my left hip where it landed on a stone, I think when I fell. Nothing else seems to be hurting. I don’t feel any cramping or pain down there.”

“Good. Let me listen to you and then I’ll listen to the baby’s heartbeat. It can be a little tricky with a regular stethoscope, but I should be able to do it. Just be really quiet.” I think that last part was for me and Demon. He was intently watching Zara.

She quickly and efficiently checked her blood pressure, pulse, listened to her heart and then felt her stomach. Finally, she listened to her stomach. When she took the stethoscope out of her ears, I had to ask.

“Well, are they alright, doc?”

“They seem to be fine. The baby’s heartbeat is nice and strong and steady. Jessica’s blood pressure is a tad elevated, but that’s to be expected after what she just went through. I want to look at her hip and back. If you would step out for a minute,” she said to Demon. He nodded and left, pulling the door closed behind him.

Zara rolled Jess over and helped her to pull up her shirt and her pants down. I could see a dark bruise forming on her hip and scrapes on her back. Zara helped get her clothes rearranged. I opened the door to let Demon back inside. He wasn’t about to let the doc out of his sight.

“I think we’re good. You can take Tylenol for the head and drink a lot of water. If you start hurting more or in new places, have cramps, or spotting, call me right away. If I can’t come, then I’ll tell you to come into the ER or call Dr. Foreman. Now, why don’t you get some rest and make sure she eats something in the next hour or two?” Zara ordered me. I nodded.

“I will, doc. Thank you. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. How’re you feeling?” I pointed to the cut on her forehead.

“I’m fine. I have a hard head. Just a little headache like Jess. When I get home, I’ll take a nap and should be fine. I mean it, Ajax, call me for anything.”

“Thank you, Zara. Will you be back tomorrow, or do you have to work?” Jess asked her.

“I work six a.m. until six p.m. tomorrow and the next two days. Then I’m off for four days unless they call me in for a shift, which they almost always do. I’ll be lucky if I get two days. I’ll let you know. Now, get some sleep.” She hugged Jess and then gave me one. I heard the low growl Demon made when she did. I held back my chuckle. She just rolled her eyes and acted like she didn’t notice. He followed her out the door.

“Do you think those two will get together?” Jess asked me.

“If he can get his head out of his ass, then yes. I know he wants her, and if I had to guess, he wants her for more than a hookup. But enough about them, let’s get you in the shower.” I helped her to her feet.
