Chapter 10

Natasha

“Give me your wrist.”

I held it out. Ryon took it in his huge hand and attached his watch around the narrow part right before my hand began. It was too big, even on its tightest setting, and flopped inwards.

“Do they do a kiddie-sized one?” I quipped. He snorted with amusement.

“Mine was made for alphas. Sorry.”

“This wouldn’t even fit a beta.” I wondered if the alphas knew about all the times they’d inadvertently designed things like this, which subtly excluded other people. Steps which were high and harder for everyone else to climb. Things on shelves that were far too high for betas to reach. Jars that required alpha-strength to open. I was starting to see why the betas were pissed off with the world they lived in.

“Betas usually get them adjusted.”

Ah. Betas were expected to spend their hard-earned cash making changes to basic stuff so they could fit into their lives properly.

“Do you ever think maybe there’s a reason the betas are annoyed?” I asked.

“They just need to learn to rub along in the world like the rest of us do,” Ryon replied.

Shrugging, I gave up. I wasn’t an activist or a sign-waver. I didn’t have the right words to argue with him.

“Here, tap the screen like this, then when it lights up, speak into it.” He showed me how to tap the screen.

“I don’t know what to say.” I felt a flush stealing over my face.

“One to trans-mat,” he prompted.

Oh. That was how they did it. I nodded and took a breath. For some reason, it felt embarrassing to have to talk into a watch, hoping some unknown person somewhere else could understand what I was saying.

“One to trans-mat,” I told the watch.

The scenery changed and I was standing in the metal room I’d seen when I had first arrived on the ship. A wave of nausea washed through me. I covered my mouth with my hand and hoped it would pass.

“What the fuck?” I grumbled.

“That’s a normal reaction to going on a trans-mat,” an alpha male by a control panel said. I didn’t have the brain-space for pleasantries when I felt like this.

“Urgoth wants to see me.” My words were short and sharp because I was scared that words might not be the only thing about to come out of my mouth.

“He’s on his way.”

“Good.” My legs went from under me and I ended up on my hands and knees on the floor.

The door opened and Urgoth walked in, stopping right in front of me.

“The omega.” He didn’t seem to even be talking directly to me.

I opened my mouth to say something but instead I vomited all over his shiny boots.

“Oh, for goodness’ sake. There’s no need for such nonsense,” Urgoth grumbled.

“Doctor to trans-mat room, please,” said the alpha across the room.

That trans mat had really disagreed with me this time. I wondered why I was fine before.

In a rush, the doctor I’d met before came in. He took in the situation quickly.
