Her comment hurt like a punch in the stomach. “God, baby, I would never do that. If you want me to sign a legal contract, I will. I can have my lawyer make something up.”

She shook her head. “If we do this, it’s just for Corey’s sake. It has nothing to do with us.”

He sighed. “I have to be honest. I’m going to try to win you back, too. I won’t ever give up, but I promise I’ll do my best not to push.”

She let that go for the moment. “I also have an issue with the fact you’ll hardly be there. So what’s the point? If we were at my house, that’s closer than your house.”

“I’m planning on going into the office once a week and doing my work from home the majority of the time.”

Her eyes widened. “You can’t do that.”

“Hell yes, I can. I’m the boss. I’ve got good people that I’m going to give more responsibility and raises, of course.”

“Why would you do that?” she asked.

He cupped her face in his hands. “Because I’m going to do everything in my power to make you and Corey happy.”

“I don’t know.”

“No, listen, I’m going to do everything right this time. I don’t want to take any chances of losing you again. I have a lot to make up for and apologize for. I just hope you let me try.”

God, what should she do? She was terrified she’d let him in again, only for him to leave her. She hadn’t fully recovered from the last time. But the thought that maybe if she was strong enough and he changed as he talked about, they could have a family. One she’d always dreamed about.

“We’ll move in, but I want the option to move out with Corey if things go bad.”

“Absolutely.”

“I think we should concentrate on Corey right now and not us.”

He stepped away from her, picked up the boy, and wrapped an arm around her. “I think I can do both.”

He said it with one of the grins that always told her he was up to mischief, making her smile.

“How about we go home? I want you to get accustomed to everything and see what needs to be done,” he said.

“All right. I’ll go pack.”

“No, let’s just take the things Corey’s going to need for now. I’ll have some movers here to get your things.”

“They won’t know what’s mine.”

“Okay, we’ll put everything by the elevator. How’s that?”

She nodded. “Okay. I won’t be long.”

“I’ll call our driver.”

Cat closed the bedroom door, sat down on the bed, and pressed her face into her hands. God, was she doing the right thing? She really hoped she was, that this would make Corey happy and give him the best of everything.

All she needed was for her son to be healthy and happy. So, living there might be the best move for him. He’d have everything money could buy. All the things she’d wanted for him but hadn’t been able to get for him.

She stood and packed the few things she’d gotten out of the bags she’d brought. She grabbed one and started to take it to the elevator, where she’d make a pile.

“Whoa, baby. Let me do that.”

“I’ve got it,” she said as she set the bag down.
