Chapter Twenty

Cesar stepped into the house and had to admit to himself he’d never been more surprised at the sight of Amber’s mother and sister standing with his little.

“What are you doing here?” he asked.

“We were hoping she was lying again. She does that a lot, you know,” her sister said. “She told us she lived with you.”

“She does live here.” He studied them and could feel the waves of fear come off of them, and he wondered why.

They were both dressed to kill, and he could see the speculation and greed in their eyes.

He walked over to Amber and wrapped an arm around her. She was trembling. He bit his tongue to keep from yelling at the two for scaring her.

Her mother spoke up. “When are you going to come to your senses, dear? You’re dating the wrong daughter.”

“Why are you here?” he asked.

“We just came to see my daughter. Is that a crime?” Eldora asked.

He looked down at Amber. “What were you talking about?”

“That’s none of your concern, sir,” Eldora said.

His radar for bullshit and trouble was spinning now, and he stiffened.

“They just wanted me to look at some papers,” Amber said.

His eyes narrowed in suspicion on the other women. “Really? Did you sign anything?”

“Not yet.”

“But she will,” Bianca said.

God, the woman was disgusting. Everything about her was fake, and the only emotions she seemed to have were malice, hatred, and anger. Oh, hell. Don’t forget greed.

“We’ll see. If you guys are through with your visit, please show yourselves out.”

He ignored the gasps of outrage and the furious clicking sound of their heels as they walked across the tile on the foyer.

“Remember what I said, dear,” Eldora said before she turned away and closed the door.

Cesar turned back to Amber and held on to her shoulders. “Pequeña, what were the papers?”

“I’m not sure. It looked like some financial stuff.”

“And you didn’t sign anything?”

She shook her head. He could tell she was upset and put aside his suspicions for the moment until he’d taken care of her.

“I’m supposed to go to some office on Friday.”

“You’re not going unless I’m with you.”

“That’s what I told them, but my mother said that men come and go, but blood relatives are forever, and would I want to kill any chance I have at a relationship with the two?”

“That’s all bullshit.”

She nodded.
