She deflated and sagged against his chest. “No, but it’s not going to work out.”
“Yes, it is. You were made to be mine.”
“Not if you get disappointed every time I do something you don’t approve of.”
“I’ve never been disappointed in you. Why would you say that?” he asked.
“It looked like that when we were in the lobby.”
“Well, it certainly wasn’t disappointment. More like fear I tried to hide.”
She looked over her shoulder at him. “Fear?”
“Yes. When I was told what the situation was, I about lost it. All I could think of was what would happen if I lost you.”
She felt a lump of emotion clogging her throat. Did he really care about her that much? She blinked back her tears. “Really?”
“Yes. I love you, and I never want to lose you. I can’t say it any plainer than that.”
Oh, thank God. She could no longer hold them back. Tears filled her eyes. “I love you, too. So much.”
