She felt the dirtball reach into his jacket and knew she couldn’t let him get that gun out. So, she turned to face him, brought her knee up into his balls as hard as she could, and then watched him drop.

The sound that came from him reminded her of a teapot ready to blow, and she almost smiled.

She sat on him and kept his hand away from his jacket. “He’s got a gun,” she yelled.

Travis and a few other guys were there. While one of the men reached for the gun in the guy’s jacket, Travis lifted her out of the way. Two more pinned him to the ground and snapped handcuffs on him.

Travis looked over her shoulder and then smiled down at her. “Now, you’ve done it.”

She turned and saw Trey headed their way, and she knew she was in for it. She held out a hand. “Wait, before you start yelling at me,” she said to Trey. “Will you listen to my story?”

He stopped a foot from her and crossed his arms over his chest. “Not yet.”

She could tell by the tone of his voice he was at the end of his control, but what got her the most was the slight shaking of his hands and the tic that started in his cheek.

Tears burned her eyes. God, she loved him. No one had been as protective of her, or this upset when she almost got hurt.

Several police officers walked in. A few took the guy into custody while one headed their way.

“Hi, I’m Officer Bently. One of the guys pointed you out to us, miss. They told me the guy was trying to get you out of the building?”

She glanced at Trey and saw a look she’d never seen before. Was it disappointment or frustration, or was he finally at the end of his patience with her? She knew she was hard to handle at times, but she thought she was doing better. It just might not be good enough.

Her emotions went from elation that he cared for her to sadness that she’d probably lost him, and her stomach twisted into a painful knot.

She didn’t blame him, but it still hurt to know not even he could put up with her for long.

“Yes, Officer. Someone called me as I was headed toward the office and said there was a package for me. I came off the elevator and saw the guy in a delivery jacket, and headed toward him. It wasn’t until I was a foot away before I recognized him as one of Billy’s friends, and he grabbed my arm.”

The officer asked about Billy and everything she knew.

“What happened next?”

“I was going to blow him off and yell for one of the guards, but the butthead showed me his gun and threatened to start shooting if I didn’t go with him. I was still going to tell him to fuck off, but then I saw Nia and Travis come in the front door, and I couldn’t chance them getting hurt, so I told him I’d go with him.”

Jenna glanced up at Trey and saw he was even madder than he’d been before.

She looked back at the officer. “Travis started asking me questions, and I was trying to hurry the dirtbag out of the building so he couldn’t hurt anyone, and then two guards cut us off. Well, the jackass started to reach for the gun, so I kneed him and then sat on his chest until the guys could get to us. I told them about the gun. And here we are.”

The officer wrote a few things down before he looked at her. “I think that’s it for now, but I might have some questions later. What’s a number I can reach you at?”

“It’s—”

Trey interrupted her as she started to give her number and gave the cop his own.

“Call me if you have any more questions for her.”

The office nodded. “Will do. Nice job on defusing a situation that could have gone really bad, miss.”

“Thank you.” She felt Trey stiffen.

After the cop walked away, Trey grabbed her hand to get her full attention. “I want you to go to our condo, pack a bag, and stay there until I come for you.”

Her mouth dropped open. “What? Are you serious?” Was he pushing her out right now?

“Yes, very serious.”

Shock and grief spread through her, and she was speechless for a moment. So, she just nodded, turned, and headed toward the elevator.

God, he wasn’t even going to give her a chance.
