“Very slim possibility, we’ll know after the ultrasound.”
Luke worried for them both until they got the answer a couple days later at the appointment.
“Dani, would you like to see your baby?” Miranda asked turning the monitor towards them. “Right here,” she said pointing to a tiny form, “this is your baby.”
She motioned to the tech to move the wand to a new position and added, “And this is its twin.”
“Twin?” Dani said covering her mouth in shock. “We’re having twins?”
“Yes, and everything looks perfect,” Miranda stated as the tech moved the wand again to show them an image of both babies together. “It does mean you’ll need to gain just a bit more weight.”
“I’ll gladly gain as much as possible,” Dani told them as Luke leaned over to kiss her. “Twins…”
“My beautiful girls,” Luke said smiling at her.
“Who says it’s a girl? It’s still too early to tell right?”
“Right, we can do another ultrasound in a few more weeks and hopefully find that out with accuracy if you would like and we’ll use it to monitor their growth. Congratulations Dani, Luke, I’ll see you in a few weeks.”
Dani nodded letting Luke take her home to celebrate together. They hadn’t told anyone else yet, she was still mildly worried something horrible would happen, but she couldn’t keep this information to herself any longer and there was only one person she wanted to tell.
She waited until Luke had gone to work the next morning and pulled out her cell calculating the time difference as she did.
“Hey pretty girl…how’s my favorite sister doing?” Dean asked answering instantly. “I was just thinking about you.”
“Must be that twin connection,” she replied with a grin though he couldn’t see it.
“Someone’s sounding awfully chipper; did that husband of yours whisk you off somewhere special again? Another honeymoon?”
“Nope, he did something much better than that. I’m pregnant Dean.”
“Dani! I thought you two weren’t…how far?”
“About twelve weeks, we haven’t told anyone even though we’ve known for a good two months, and we weren’t trying. When we went off to the beach house for our little getaway we didn’t come home to pack, and I’d left my pills here.”
“No way…that quick?” Dean laughed. “Man, that must have been one hell of a getaway.”
“Hush, but that’s not it Dean. We had an ultrasound yesterday and it’s twins.”
“Dani, that’s awesome. How are you feeling? Physically…emotionally…”
“Good, tired and a bit scared, but so far everything’s been going well. Luke and I are thrilled even if we weren’t trying to make this happen. Plus, we’ve been sticking around home more so the tabloids are getting less junk to print about us which helps too.”
“I’m glad honey,” Dean said before demanding to know everything else that’d been going on. She happily filled him in, staying on the phone for almost two hours before they finally said good-bye.
She walked around the next few days waiting for the other shoe to drop or something tragic to come their way, but it didn’t, and she tried her best not to worry. It didn’t work though, and she convinced Luke to hold onto their secret a bit longer, despite the tiny bump that was forming along her waistline. It wasn’t enough to cause a stir and she could disguise it easily enough when she went out.
They agreed to tell the family after the next appointment, and she decided to make it an event for them. Luke came home sliding his arms around her waist letting his hands rest on the tiny bump as she cooked up the food.
“Baby game hens, baby carrots, baby roasted potatoes, baby corn on the cob…do we have a theme going on here Mrs. Nolan?” he inquired kissing her neck.
“You should check out the rest,” she said shooing him towards the fridge where the salads and everything else was.
“If they don’t pick up on it from the food the dessert should certainly be a dead giveaway.”
“That’s what I thought,” she told him with a grin. “You should change, unless you’re going to wear your suit all night.”
Luke made his way upstairs changing just in time to get the door for her and start the evening.
