GEORGIANA
“So,we’re doing this, right? No more hot and cold?” I probably should have asked this the second our eyes met this morning. Kind of odd to ask while Silas is standing against the open door to my vehicle, which by the way, there wasn’t a need to start it early to let it cool down. The air conditioning is cranking.
“We’re doin’ this. Can’t tell you it’ll always be hearts and fairies, Doe. I got a lot of demons. What I will promise is that when you call me out on it, we’ll fight, I’ll eventually see the error of my ways, and we’ll work through it, okay?” Damn this man for knowing all the right things to say. The best part about Silas is that I know, without a shadow of a doubt, he means them.
“Alright. Also, I’m not sure how I’ll ever repay you, but you seriously need to figure out some way for me to because I know you did a lot more than change the starter. The AC alone is about to freeze my tits off, and I’m not even in the car yet.” His arm is hanging on the open car door, the other around my hip, holding me while he tries not to laugh at my obnoxious joke.
“That happens, I better be the first person you call.” He dips his head and touches his lips to mine, meshing them with one another’s, and when he pulls away, it’s with a grumble.
“Who the hell is that?” I ask. His eyes are on the same black vehicle, clearly government issued.
“Doe, goin’ to need you to call in late to work and then call Ma and Dad. We’re about to get a front row view of just how much of a bitch my probation officer is.” Silas doesn’t hang his head. If anything, he stands up taller, back ramrod straight, and I know he’s trying to hold it together, but I can also feel the tenseness in his body.
“Well, shit, just when we thought we’d have a drama-free day. You want me to stay right here and make the calls?” I ask.
“That’d be good. I’m goin’ to walk to her car. She may do a house check. It’s why I need you to make the calls. Fast, Gigi.” He kisses my forehead, then he does what he said he was going to. Meanwhile, my stomach is at my feet. I’m scrambling to grab my phone that’s in the car, turning it off, too.
“Hey, Gigi, what’s shaking?” Shila answers on the first ring.
“Hey, Silas asked for you and Shadow to come to the house. He’s got an unexpected visitor.” I’m a nervous wreck for him. Any little thing, and I know they could throw the book at him.
“Not to worry. We’re already on our way. We saw the twatwaffle pull in. Don’t you worry, okay? Everything’s good, and there’s nothing she could bring him in on,” Shila consoles me when really shouldn’t it be the other way around.
“Alright. I can’t really tell Silas that right now. He’s attempting to cut her off before she goes into the house.” Part of his conditions was not to leave the county without authorization, no drugs, and no guns of any kind in the house. Seeing as he hasn’t left club property that I’m aware of since he’s been home, and he doesn’t do drugs, he should be fine.
“All is good on that front, too. Proud that Silas pulled through. Now it’s time for you to stand by your man.” As if I was going to leave him in a lurch. Even if we weren’t together and he were still acting like a total douche canoe, I’d still be right where I am.
“Oh, I am, but this lady, she gives me a really bad feeling. I’m going to call Mindy and see if she can cover for me until we figure out what’s going on,” I finish telling her as the dust from the dirt driveway coming from the opposite direction makes it known they’re home.
“Later,” she replies. I don’t say a word. I nod in their direction, fumbling to find Mindy’s number. It’s not that I think she’ll have a problem with me showing up late. My nerves are just doing a number on me today. I just got Silas, really got him, and now something could happen. It’s leaving an awful taste in my mouth.
“Sweetie, are you okay?” That’s how Mindy answers her phone. Gosh, I love her.
“Hey, Mindy, do you mind if I’m a few minutes late to work?”
“Not at all, Gigi. Take the day off if you want. It would save me a pile of money if you’d burn through some of your sick or vacation days.” The laughter comes from the heart, and I can imagine her whole body shaking while she does it.
“Are you sure? I know it’s last minute.” Thankfully, there isn’t a stomach bug going around again, causing nothing but staff shortages and for all of us to drop like flies.
“Positive. Go enjoy your day.” I want to mumble ‘I’ll try, but some bitch of a woman has it in her sights to ruin that.’ Somehow, I manage not to. Barely.
“Will do. Thanks again.” I hang up and shut my car door, not that I was in it, just standing next to it. My eyes didn’t leave Silas but only for one second, and that was when his parents pulled in. Now it’s time to figure out what exactly is going on and what we can do to hurry this along. A bad feeling is consuming me that Silas won’t be okay when this is said and done.
