“It had to be hard on you, baby, and for that, I am sorry.” He cleared his throat. “Do you know why he was doing it?”
“Why?”
“Your in-laws paid him.”
Rory jumped up from the chair.“What?”
“Yes. They were angry that Clay left you the farm and not to them.”
“It was his decision. They signed the farm over to him, and as his wife, he left it to me. I can’t believe this.” She gasped. “I didn’t realize they felt that way.” Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“You never know someone as well as you think you do. I can’t say I’m sorry enough.”
“You just get better, Wilder Richards, because we have a future to plan.”
He grinned. “So, I wasn’t dreaming. You love me.”
“If you were dreaming, so was I. You love me too.”
“With all my heart, darlin’.”
She leaned down and lightly kissed his lips.
“I want babies with you.”
“I do too. I enjoy practicing with you.” He chuckled when she blushed.
“Stop. Besides, you have to heal.”
“It’s only my arm. All my other parts work.”
Someone clearing their throat made them both look toward the door. Wilder groaned when he saw Nick there with a smile on his face.
“Oh, hey. Don’t let me interrupt. I’d like some nieces or nephews. Hell, both.”
“I told you he was a pain in the ass,” Wilder said, making Rory laugh.
Nick entered the room, strode to the bed, and put his hand out to Wilder, who took it.
“Don’t ever fucking do that again.” Nick looked at Rory. “Pardon my French.”
“I will. This time. Do it again, and you won’t see those nieces or nephews.”
Nick’s eyebrows shot up as he looked at Wilder.
“Man, I’m not sure I envy you. This one is tough.”
“Very. Hey, if you two don’t mind, I want to call Dave.”
“It can wait, Wilder,” Rory said.
“I want to make sure they got Buster.”
“They did. Reece told me. Buster had to have surgery to remove the bullet, but once he heals, they’ll take him to prison.” Nick shook his head.
“He won’t be the only one going to prison. Hal, Bernie, and probably your in-laws, Rory. This was a serious crime. The rustling itself was bad, but paying someone to do it is just as serious.”
“Why didn’t they just say something?”
