“Yeah!” Lacey cheered, her face lighting up with a huge grin. That was enough reward in itself.

Laura reached out to take her by the hand, and they began to file out of the apartment together. But then Lacey stopped by the door, pouting and fidgeting.

“Do you need to pee first?” Laura suggested.

“Yeah,” Lacey admitted, then turned and ran for the bathroom.

Laura waited by the door, looking at her cell phone again. He wouldn’t answer, would he…?

There was only one way to find out. She dialed Nate’s number. Putting the phone to her ear, she listened to it ring until it hit voicemail. She ended the call with a sigh, listening to the sound of the toilet flushing further into the apartment.

“Don’t forget to wash your hands,” she yelled, hearing Lacey’s footsteps quickly retreat from the bathroom door and turn back to the sink before the taps turned on.

Nate wasn’t going to talk to her about this. She was going to have to find some way to contact him, to make him see that this wasn’t right. They were good together. They worked so well as a team. He couldn’t throw that away because he was freaked out by her abilities.

Even if she had to pretend for the rest of their careers that she wasn’t psychic after all, it would be worth it to keep him as a partner.

Lacey emerged from the bathroom with that sheepish grin that only a kid who knows they were caught can wear. Laura held a hand out towards her again, prompting Lacey to rush forward and take it. “Come on, trouble,” Laura said, smiling at her until it felt real. She had other things to focus on before tomorrow. These weekends with her daughter were fleeting, and she didn’t want to waste them preoccupied with work. “Let’s go see Amy and Chris.”
