Kevin doesn’t walkme to his car or open the door for me like he did before. I climb in and see his figure in the darkness. He puffs on a cigarette, the ember at the end illuminating his face for a moment.

“I didn't know you smoked.”

“I didn't for a while. I was quitting, but ya know. Shit happens.” He takes a deep drag.

The smoke dances between us. He's so cold to me. I suppose I deserve it.

“Well?” he asks, spitting his animosity toward me.

“I said I'd explain, so I guess I'll just get right to the point. David has lived with my mom and me since his dad attacked him when we were sixteen. We grew up together and spent most of our time with each other. I love him, and I know he loves me, but he’s like my brother. His overprotective side stems from that closeness.” I grab Kevin’s hand and weave my cold and shaky fingers through his. “I promise you, we have never been anything more than friends. We will never be anything more than that. Not like what I want with you.”

His face softens and he squeezes my hand. “And what is it you want with me?”

“I want to be with you.”

He leans in and kisses me. He tastes like cigarettes.

“So when can I see you again?” He smiles at me.
