She headed outside after that, battling down more tears. Their bags were loaded in her car, and then Hugo was driving them out the gates.
“It’ll be okay.” He placed his hand over hers.
“My chest hurts.”
“We’ll be back, Luna. You may not believe that now, but I know it.”
She didn’t respond, just watched the scenery pass her by, trying to memorize all of it. Turning onto the main street, they were stopped by Chief Blake at the beginning of town.
“Morning,” he said to Hugo. Then bending, he waved to Luna. “Find a parking spot anywhere; all the fun is about to begin.”
“We were just leaving, Chief Blake.”
“Not now, you’re not. The street is closed off for the carnival.”
“Is there another way out?” Hugo asked.
“Only for emergencies or you go by boat. Park the car and come and enjoy yourselves. The road will be closed a while,” the Ryker Chief of Police said before walking away.
“Well, hell,” Hugo said, turning the car around and heading back out of town until he found a parking spot and pulled into it.
“I’ll just sit here,” Luna said.
“No, you won’t. Your mountain man is at his ranch, so you won’t run into him. We’re going to eat and drink for the last time in Ryker Falls.”
“Hugo—”
“Suck it up, buttercup. Get a hat on and move it.” He got out.
“Damnit!” Luna followed.
Getting her cap out of her bag, she pulled on dark glasses.
“Let’s go. I might get a blueberry and lemon scone from Tea Total and then a brioche from the chocolate place,” Hugo said.
“I haven’t had breakfast,” Luna said, wondering how she could even think of food when her life was imploding.
“Park it for now, Luna. Let’s go and have some fun before we go.”
Fun?Could she when inside her heart hurt from love and betrayal? Her stomach rumbled.Maybe she could.
