Nash managed to nod.

“When she’s upset, do you feel like someone took out your insides and threw them in the clothes dryer?”

He found himself nodding again.

“Do you feel stuff for her you’ve never felt for any woman before her?”

Christ.

“I’m taking that as an affirmative, seeing as you look like you want to be sick.”

“It can’t work,” he said, looking into his coffee. “How can it?”

“Your mom lived in another state when I fell love with her, son.”

“But she’s who she is,” he rasped.

He felt his mom take his hand in hers and squeeze.

“Nash, I have not seen you this happy since that bitch, you’ll pardon my language but there is no other word for her, left. You’ve been smiling, laughing, and happy. I’m not saying you haven’t been in the last few years, but there was no lightness in you, son.”

“I’ve seen you with her, brother.” He felt Ford’s hand on his shoulder. “She does something to you. Seeing you with her made me realize what has been missing since that bitch left.”

“I’ll allow that, seeing as I said it,” his mother said.

Nash looked at his family. Maggs was missing, but he knew she’d back them up. Was it true, did he love Luna? Poking around in his chest, he knew the answer.

“I need to go.” He got out of his chair suddenly. “I wasn’t nice to her after your call, Dad. I need to go back now and make that right.”

“You do that, Nash,” his father said.

“And bring her for a visit,” his mother added.

“Look after my horse,” he said, and then he was running out of the house.
