“Understood. I need to drop my things off at my dorm and then head to my class. I can walk to them, so it’s no big deal. You don’t have to drive me around.”

“I won’t be. I’ll be walking with you.” I roll my eyes. “You will get used to it.”

“Does he have you do this all the time?”

“What do you mean?”

“Escort whoever he’s dating at the moment?”

“Landon doesn’t date. He doesn’t have the time or the patience for it.” I feel much better knowing that bit of information because it’s a bit weird having strangers guard me, but it would be worse if this was their usual and they went around on their off time talking about how the boss protects all of his hookups.

“So what about this other detail?”

“Trying to get rid of me so soon? If I had feelings, they would be hurt.”

“Thank goodness that you don’t.”

“Tomorrow. Landon’s interviewing the best. He’d prefer a female on your team as well as a male, but he wants someone strong enough to protect you as well.”

“A female?” I can’t hide the fact that he’s busy interviewing women and I’m jealous.

“Damn, you two are perfect for each other. Green-eyed monsters running rampant. He’s looking for a female to be around you when he’s not around because he doesn’t want you falling for a handsome devil like me.”

“Conceited much?”

“Wow, someone is dishing out the blows hard today.”

“Sorry, I’m a bit aggravated. My brother thinks Landon’s no good for me.”

“Well, he’s your brother. He’s wrong, but he’s your brother and his job is to shoo away all the men in your life until you’re old and undesirable, or until he’s finally settled down and doesn’t care if you finally find someone.”

“Damn, you men suck. Do you have any sisters?”

“Yes. Way too many to count.”

“How many?”

“One, but she’s got the personality of six.”

“Yeah, seems like a family trait.”

“I’m gonna tell Landon you were trying to run away. I had to chase you down and threaten you.”

“What?”

“I’ll do it, so you better start being nice to me.”

“Whatever. I’m going to tell him you were flirting with me.”

“You’re evil,” he says, glaring at me through the rearview mirror. My Cheshire cat grin widens as I sit back and cross my arms. I’ve made my point and won.

“Takes one to know one.”

“Truce.” His shoulders slump and I nod, accepting this accord. We pull into a campus parking spot, and he puts the SUV into park.

“Truce.” We shake hands, and then he gets out first before letting me out.
