“I can probably go home today, sweetheart. Another few hours and I’ll be strong enough. Can you go tell the doctors? I need to talk to Grayson and Aaron.”
She nodded and left the small cubicle. I pinned my Alpha with a stare.
“What the fuck happened out there? One minute we were pulling up, there to save our mate, then I was getting shot up. What did I miss? Did you kill that asshole?”
I bloody hoped so, but I got the feeling they hadn’t.
“No. We couldn’t.” Grayson’s gaze slid to Aaron. “He had Aaron and if we didn’t let him go, he was going to kill him.”
Aaron’s face turned red and he looked away, then crossed his arms over his chest.
“Not sure you made the right choice there.”
“Of course, I did,” Grayson said, his tone deep and growly. “I’m just angry the bear got away.”
“And what happened with Nevaeh? Why is there so much tension? I could slice it off with a knife.”
“I don’t think that’s the expression,” Aaron said.
I raised my eyebrows and stared at him. “Oh, seriously?”
He must be really embarrassed by what happened out there if he was making jokes like that.
Grayson took a step towards the door. “Now that we know you’re all right, we’ll go home for a bit. I need a shower and some sleep. But we’ll come back to pick you up when they say we can take you home.”
“Hang on, you didn’t tell me what happened with Nevaeh.”
The woman in question stepped into the room.
“We’ll let her tell you,” Grayson said as he disappeared from sight.
Aaron nodded once and left too.
Nevaeh was left swaying like a leaf in the wind, looking lost and confused.
I grabbed her hand and tugged her into the chair next to my hospital bed.
“Hey, beautiful. Seems like I’ve missed a few things. What’s going on?”
Nevaeh clung to my hand. “I don’t really know. I mean… I know I left your place in a huff the other day, which was wrong and stupid, but when you three turned up to save me, I assumed you’d be happy to see me. But Aaron and Grayson are standoffish and angry. I mean… I know I look like a real mess, but I…”
She stopped.
“You what, sweetheart?”
“I was hoping we could sort everything out, but it looks like they’re not going to forgive me.”
Silver tears slipped down her cheeks and she wiped at her nose with a tissue from the table by my bed.
“Oh, sweetheart. Why are you upset? You haven’t even asked a question of anyone. Why are you assuming you’ve been rejected? We came for you. We fought for you.”
Well, Aaron and Grayson had. I’d have fought for her too, if I hadn’t been shot.
Nevaeh stood up and moved away, swiping at the tears. “Oh… I’m not… I…”
I stared at her.
She thought we’d rejected her.
